Errors play big roles in pair of losses to Tomcats

GREENVILLE, Pa. (April 17) – The Waynesburg University softball team took its four-game winning streak to Thiel College on Wednesday for a  Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with the Tomcats. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets saw their string of victories come to an end in Greenville as the Cats swept the twin-bill by the final scores of 5-2 and 7-2.

Waynesburg (12-14, 4-7) found itself in an early 2-0 hole in game one after Thiel (10-16, 5-7) scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. However, a pair of Yellow Jacket freshmen got the visitors right back into the contest. With a runner on second and two outs on the board, third baseman Katey Potopenko connected on an RBI double that scored sophomore centerfielder Shelby Tabrosky to cut the Tomcats' lead in half. Designated player Cameron Grimes brought Potopenko in to tie the game up at 2-2 with a clutch RBI single.

The game stayed knotted up at 2-2 until the top of the fifth inning, when Thiel scored a pair of runs, one of which was unearned, to move ahead 4-2 of its opposition. The home team took advantage of another Jacket miscue in the top of the sixth to score the game's final run on a wild pitch.

The Yellow Jackets out-hit the Cats in the opener by a 10-to-nine margin, but were done in largely by two errors and stranding nine runners on the base pads. Tabrosky, Potopenko and junior leftfielder Jasmine Blackwell picked up two hits each in the loss. Junior Carrie Maier started and worked all seven innings in the circle. She gave up four earned runs on nine hits and no walks.

Game two shared some noticeable similarities to the opener, as the Jackets out-hit the opposition (eight-to-seven), but mistakes hindered their efforts. Thiel took a 4-0 lead after four innings of play, but three of the scores were unearned.

Waynesburg got to back into the game with a two-spot in the top of the fifth inning. Blackwell singled in Tabrosky to cut the Jacket deficit down to three runs (4-1), before junior designated player Sarah Spicher singled in freshman shortstop Jessica Dorazio to pull the visitors to within two runs of tying up the score. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Jackets came to victory, as Thiel scored three runs, two of which were unearned, in the sixth to seal the win.

Freshman Stephanie Kotomski started and worked six innings in the pitching circle. She gave up all seven runs, only two of which were earned, on seven hits and no walks. Maier returned to toss a perfect seventh inning.

Blackwell recorded two hits for the second time on the day, one of which was a triple. Sophomore first baseman Haley Payne also posted a pair of hits in the loss, one of which was a double. The Yellow Jackets committed seven errors in the loss and stranded nine more runners.

The Jackets won't have long to think about Wednesday's setbacks, as they are scheduled to hit the road tomorrow for a non-PAC doubleheader at Mount Aloysius College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
