CRESSON, Pa. (April 18) – The Waynesburg University softball team played its final non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games of 2013 on Thursday, when the Yellow Jackets traveled to Mount Aloysius. Unfortunately, the trip wasn't a successful one for the Jackets, who were swept in a doubleheader by the Mounties.
Waynesburg (12-16) fell in game one, despite out-hitting Mount Aloysius (20-9) by a six-to-five margin. The Mounties scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, before ultimately taking the opener by the final score of 5-0.
Freshman third baseman
Katey Potopenko continued a recent streak of hot hitting by going two-for-three with a pair of doubles. Sophomore pitcher
Jenn Lingg started in the circle and worked four innings to take the loss. She gave up five runs, three of which were earned, on four hits and three walks. Junior
Carrie Maier relieved Lingg and gave up just one base hit over two innings of work.
Game two got off to another slow start for the visiting team, as the Mounties posted a three-spot in the bottom of the first inning. Waynesburg was finally able to post its first run of the afternoon when Potopenko scored on a fielding error during the at-bat of sophomore designated player
Katelyn Smith in the second.
Freshman catcher
Brittany Hott recorded the Jackets' only RBI of the day when she smacked a single that allowed Potopenko to score her second run of the game. After the Jackets pulled to within a single run of tying the game up at 3-2, Mount Aloysius put the finishing touches on the victory with three runs during its half of the fourth frame.
Potopenko added a second-straight two-for-three showing on the day with a game-high two runs scored. Freshman
Paige Moninger got the start in the circle for the visitors and allowed six runs, five of which were earned, on seven hits. Fellow freshman
Stephanie Kotomski pitched a perfect final inning of the late game.
Waynesburg returns to PAC play on Saturday, April 20, when the Jackets welcome Bethany to their home field. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
