WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 25) – The Waynesburg University softball team wrapped up the non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) portion of its 2013 schedule on Thursday by welcoming Muskingum University to town for a seven-inning doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets dropped both games of the twin bill by the final scores of 10-0 and 9-4.
Waynesburg (15-19) just couldn't get its offense going in game one and was out-hit by an 11-to-six margin. Six different Yellow Jackets collected one hit each in the loss. Junior
Carrie Maier started and took the loss after giving up two runs in two innings. Freshman
Stephanie Kotomski performed respectively out of the bullpen, giving up one run over two innings on two hits.
Game two of the twin bill followed the same script as the opener until the bottom of the seventh inning, when some unlikely heroes kept the Yellow Jackets from being at the wrong end of a second-straight shutout. Freshman reserve
Katelyn Smith drove in the Jackets' first run of the day with a double that scored another freshman backup,
Cameron Grimes. Two batters later, freshman backup catcher
Samantha Pillar did her teammate one better with a two-run double that plated Smith and junior backup
Lauren Roycroft. Pillar scored the final run of the day when sophomore centerfielder
Shelby Tabrosky singled off the third baseman's glove with two outs on the board.
Four different pitchers toed the rubber for Waynesburg in the late game, including Maier, Grimes, freshman
Paige Moninger and sophomore
Jenn Lingg. Just as in game one, six different Yellow Jackets picked up one hit each in game two. Muskingum improved to 25-11 for the year.
The Jackets wrap up the 2013 regular season on Saturday, when they host PAC rival Washington & Jefferson for senior day. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
