WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 27) – The Waynesburg University softball team wrapped up its 2013 season by celebrating senior day under sunny skies on Saturday afternoon against rival Washington and Jefferson. The Presidents pushed out to an early lead for a 5-1 victory in game one. W&J went on to sweep the doubleheader by scoring two late runs and holding on for a 7-5 win in game two.

Before the start of the doubleheader, the Yellow Jackets recognized seniors Rachael Moon and Lauren Roycroft. Moon finished the season ranking second in batting average, runs, hits, triples and RBI. The Brea Olinda, Calif. native also tied for the team lead in stolen bases. Moon missed the final 11 games after suffering an injury. Roycroft earned the start as the designated player in game one. The Robinson, Pa. native slugged the team's first hit of the game in the bottom of the third.

The Presidents (24-12, 13-5) built a 4-0 lead before the Jackets (15-21, 7-11) finally got on the board in the home half of the fifth inning. Junior shortstop Madison Presto laced a double to center field to start the frame. Two outs later sophomore catcher Jessica Gavin singled home Presto to cut the deficit to 4-1. W&J responded with a run in the sixth inning to make it 5-1 to round out the game's scoring.

Presto led the way offensively with a pair of hits in game one. Junior pitcher Carrie Maier took the loss, pitching all seven innings and surrendering five runs, four of which were earned. The Jacket ace struck out four, while walking one.

Coach Lou Giachetti cleared his bench in game two, using 19 different players in the season finale. The offense seemed to respond to the wide variety of talent, as the Jackets scored five runs on nine hits. Unfortunately for Waynesburg, the PAC Tournament-bound Presidents totaled seven runs on 14 hits, including two in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie and score the win.

Waynesburg got on the board in the first when junior leftfielder Jasmine Blackwell drove in sophomore third baseman Ashley Clark, who had doubled to start the inning. W&J quickly responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to snatch a 3-1 lead. The Presidents pushed its advantage to 5-1 with a pair of runs in the third.

However, the scrappy Yellow Jackets refused to go down without a fight. The team scored two runs in the fifth inning and a pair in the sixth to draw even at 5-5. Blackwell singled to lead off the fifth and scored on an RBI base knock from junior right fielder Jenna Dorazio. Freshman catcher Brittany Hott then brought home freshman Katey Potopenko with an RBI single up the middle. Potopenko continued her strong finish to the season with a two-run, game-tying double in the top of the sixth inning.

Freshman pitcher Paige Moninger took the loss in relief, working 1.2 innings and allowing two unearned runs on four hits.
