BLUFFTON, Ohio (Sept. 18) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team scored a dramatic late-game win over Bluffton University on Wednesday. Freshman
Josh Hennigh picked a good time to score his first collegiate goal, which wound up being the deciding score in the Yellow Jackets' 4-3 victory over the Beavers.
Hennigh's all-important tally came late in the 88
th minute, and was set up by junior
Ray Melone's corner kick. The win improved the Jackets' overall record to 4-1, while Bluffton fell to 0-5 on the year.
Waynesburg came firing out of the gate against its hosts and scored two goals before five minutes of game time had elapsed. Senior
Tim Fields scored the first goal of the game off an assists from freshman
David Nicholl. The veteran set up his team's second score by finding junior
Cody Lemke for his third tally of the season.
Bluffton clawed its way back into the contest by recording two goals of its own before the end of the 19
th minute, before the Jackets regained the advantage in the 25
th minutes. Sophomore
Zack Benedict's second goal of the year, which was assisted on by classmate
Victor Browne, put the Jackets back ahead by a point (3-2) with around 20 minutes to play before halftime.
The visitors maintained their one-score lead into the second half, before the Beavers tied everything up in the 62
nd minute. The contest appeared to be heading into overtime before Hennigh found the back of the net to put a cap on the victory.
Fields piled up a game-high three total points in the victory. Junior
Brandon Daughtry made two saves to score the win in net. Waynesburg out-shot its opposition by a 25-to-11 margin and doubled up Bluffton in the corner kick department (six-to-three).
After playing its past three games on the road, Waynesburg returns to John F. Wiley Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 24, when the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin-Wallace College come to town. Start time is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
