Hennigh leads mens soccer to victory

Freshman fires in game-deciding goal in 4-3 road win

Box Score

BLUFFTON, Ohio (Sept. 18) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team scored a dramatic late-game win over Bluffton University on Wednesday. Freshman Josh Hennigh picked a good time to score his first collegiate goal, which wound up being the deciding score in the Yellow Jackets' 4-3 victory over the Beavers.

Hennigh's all-important tally came late in the 88th minute, and was set up by junior Ray Melone's corner kick. The win improved the Jackets' overall record to 4-1, while Bluffton fell to 0-5 on the year.

Waynesburg came firing out of the gate against its hosts and scored two goals before five minutes of game time had elapsed. Senior Tim Fields scored the first goal of the game off an assists from freshman David Nicholl. The veteran set up his team's second score by finding junior Cody Lemke for his third tally of the season.

Bluffton clawed its way back into the contest by recording two goals of its own before the end of the 19th minute, before the Jackets regained the advantage in the 25th minutes. Sophomore Zack Benedict's second goal of the year, which was assisted on by classmate Victor Browne, put the Jackets back ahead by a point (3-2) with around 20 minutes to play before halftime.

The visitors maintained their one-score lead into the second half, before the Beavers tied everything up in the 62nd minute. The contest appeared to be heading into overtime before Hennigh found the back of the net to put a cap on the victory.

Fields piled up a game-high three total points in the victory. Junior Brandon Daughtry made two saves to score the win in net. Waynesburg out-shot its opposition by a 25-to-11 margin and doubled up Bluffton in the corner kick department (six-to-three).

After playing its past three games on the road, Waynesburg returns to John F. Wiley Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 24, when the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin-Wallace College come to town. Start time is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
