WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 7) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team used three unanswered goals over the final 30 minutes of play to defeat visiting La Roche 3-1 on Saturday evening at John F. Wiley Stadium.
La Roche opened up the scoring in the eighth minute of the contest to get off to a fast start. However, Waynesburg (3-0) clamped down on the visiting Redhawks (0-4) and allowed itself a chance in the second half, where a pair of junior standouts stepped up and turned things around.
Waynesburg forward
James Sneed continued his hot start to the season with a pair of goals, the first coming in the 60
th minute off a cross from senior captain
Tim Fields. That goal tied the contest and the score stayed that way for several minutes until
Cody Lemke gave the Jackets their first lead with a tally in the 71
st minute. Lemke did a great job sticking with the play and followed his own shot to get a rebound and tap it past the La Roche goalkeeper.
Sneed added a second goal on a breakaway in the 84
th minute to all but seal the victory for the home team. His two scores pushed him to five now in just three games this season. Junior goalkeeper
Brandon Daughtry stopped five saves to earn the victory in net.
Waynesburg held slight advantages in shots (18-to-14) and corner kicks (eight to six). The 3-0 start for the Jackets is their best after three matches since starting 2-0-1 in the 2005 season.
The Jackets will look to stay unbeaten on the season, when they return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 7, with a road trip to Frostburg State. The match with the Bobcats is set to get underway at 7 p.m.
