Luke Lohr continued his season-long unbeaten streak at 149 pounds by picking up a 19-6 major decision win over Greg Kabakjian to put his team on the board (12-4).
The Jackets matched their opposition's three-bout winning streak thanks to hard-fought wins at 157 and 165 pounds. Lombardo battled for seven minutes with Larry Cannon, who is listed as an honorable mention honoree on the D3Wrestle.com national rankings. By the time the final buzzer went off, Lombardo had earned a 5-4 victory that cut Messiah's lead to 12-7.
Guidi squared off with the older Cannon brother, Stepthen, at 165 pounds and controlled the bout from its start en route to a 7-0 triumph. After the two teams split the first six bouts of the afternoon, the Falcons were clinging to a 12-10 lead with a very special 174-pound bout about to take place.
Both Bonaventura and Messiah's Ricardo Plummer are featured in the D3wrestle.com and National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) national top 10 lists. The talented seniors played the role of two of the best in the nation in a hotly contested bout that went right down to the wire. Unfortunately, for the home crowd, Bonaventura came up just short of victory in a 3-2 loss.
Plummer's win sparked a match-sealing run that included pins for the Falcons at 184 and 197 pounds. Kumer was able to end the match on a high note for the Yellow Jackets, as he beat Charles Jones 6-4.
Waynesburg's third match of the day, which came against the Student Princes (8-10), got off to a similar start as its loss to Messiah. Heidelberg won the first three bouts of the contest, all of which were frustrating defeats for the Jackets. Bieber dropped a 5-4 decision to Joseph Brodman, who is listed as a "contender" for the D3Wrestle.com top 10 after leading through most of the contest. Crivelli dropped a 3-1 decision in overtime, while Vitolo, who put together a handful of outstanding shot attempts that didn't failed to turn into takedowns, lost 3-2 in a bout that featured back-to-back reversals and an escape as its only scoring.
With his team trailing 9-0, Lohr swung momentum into the Jackets' favor with a pin in 3:35 that cut Heidelberg's lead to 9-6. Lombardo completed a 3-0 day by edging Aaron Banko 8-6 to tie the match at 9-9. Guidi finished up a 3-0 day of his own when he did just enough to send Jeremy Stepp to defeat in a 3-0 decision.
Now leading 12-9, Waynesburg advanced its win streak to four-straight bouts when Bonaventura rebounded from his loss to Plummer with an 8-4 victory over Brennan Kelly. Fine provided the eventual match-deciding points at 184 pounds, when he beat Matt Shurina 6-1. With two bouts remaining, the Jackets held an 18-9 lead, but the Student Princes weren't quite ready to give up the fight.
Heidelberg kept its hopes for victory alive with a major decision win at 197 pounds to cut its deficit to 18-13. That put the match in the hands of Kumer and the Princes' Nino Majoy, who is featured on the D3Wrestle.com national rankings as an honorable mention pick. Kumer scored first with an escape in the second period, but Majoy rebounded with an escape, a takedown and a point for riding time to pick up the 4-1 decision. However, Kumer did what he had to in only giving up the decision loss to give his team the win.
Messiah went 3-0 on the day, while Heidelberg went 1-2 and Dubois posted an 0-3 mark. Lombardo, Guidi, Thomson and Majoy posted flawless 3-0 individual marks for the event. Waynesburg is back home on Wednesday, Jan. 22, when it hosts Ohio Valley, Penn State Fayette and Penn State Beaver for a quad-match. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
