WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 3) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team got 2014 off to a fine start by taking down Elizabethtown 32-9 on Friday. The Yellow Jackets won eight-of-10 bouts, four of which came with bonus points.
The match got started at 133 pounds, where freshman
Filippo Crivelli gutted out a 6-3 win over Todd Dumas to put his team up 3-0. That decision was the first of six-straight victories for the Jackets (9-5) that put the home squad ahead 23-0.
Junior
Jake Vitolo followed Crivelli with a 10-0 major decision, before junior
Chris Milligan added four team points of his own with a 10-2 major. Senior
Sam Lombardo turned a tightly contested 157-pound bout into a thrilling pin by putting Jordan Moser to his back at the 6:57 mark of the contest.
Junior
Sam Guidi won what some might consider the marquee matchup of the night by blanking Zeke Zimmer 6-0. Both grapplers were listed in the D3wrestle.com national rankings. Waynesburg's long match-opening win streak concluded with senior
Anthony Bonaventura opening up an early lead and holding on for a 6-5 triumph over Woodie Hermann at 174 pounds.
The Blue Jays (2-4) picked up their first win of the night at 184 pounds, but Waynesburg's
Patrick Jennings responded with one of his team's top performances of the night. The junior used a workman-like approach to defeat Jared Weaver by 8-1 decision at 197 pounds and move his team ahead 26-6. Weaver came into the night at E-town's leader in total wins (10-6), major decisions (3-0) and pins (3-3).
Jacket heavyweight
Greg Kumer received a forfeit to expand the home team's advantage to 32-6, before the Jays picked up the final points of the night at 125 pounds. Though he wound up coming up short in a 6-4 overtime decision, sophomore
Gordan Bieber showed tremendous effort by tilting Kyle McNulty to his back for three near-fall points in the waning moments of the match to turn a 4-1 deficit into a 4-4 deadlock.
Both Waynesburg and Elizabethtown will be back in action, along with eight other teams, at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Saturday for the fourth annual Waynesburg University Invitational. Start time is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
