Match Results (.pdf) WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 12) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team opened up the dual portion of its 2014-15 season on Wednesday with a home match against Division II opponent West Liberty. The contest wasn't decided until the night's final bout, and after the final buzzer had sounded, the Yellow Jackets found themselves on the right end of an 18-16 victory.
West Liberty (0-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a win at 125 pounds, but that lead was short-lived thanks to the efforts of sophomore 133-pounder
Filippo Crivelli. The defending Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champion gave the Yellow Jackets (1-0) their first lead of the night (6-3) by pinning Joe Wagstaff in 2:44.
The Hilltoppers regained a three-point advantage with decision wins at 141 and 149 pounds, before senior
Luke Lohr hit the mat at 157 pounds. Lohr scored a 12-7 decision to tie things back up at 9-9. Freshman
Derek Hull enjoyed a successful debut in front of his home fans by taking DeMadre Turner into overtime at 165 pounds. Hull didn't take long to make to make an impact as a collegiate wrestler, as he caught Turner in a head lock near the end of the first sudden victory period. He didn't get the fall, but the rookie notched a takedown and three near-fall points to take the contest 7-2 and give the Orange and Black a 12-9 advantage.
Senior
Sam Guidi made it three-straight Waynesburg wins with a 4-3 decision at 174 pounds. West Liberty pulled to within two points (15-13) with a major decision at 184 pounds, before another of the night's big performers stepped to the mat.
Senior
Patrick Jennings faced off with Nate Dawson at 197 pounds and wrestled a smart, clean bout that ended with the Jacket veteran on the right end of a 3-2 decision.
With the Jackets up 18-13, junior heavyweight
Greg Kumer knew all he needed to do was stay off his back to ensure the team win. Kumer scored first on a reversal, but ultimately dropped an 8-2 decision that secured Waynesburg's victory.
Waynesburg is next in action on Sunday, Nov. 16, when it travels to York (Pa.) College to take part in a highly competitive quad-match. The first contest of the day is scheduled to get going at 12 p.m. and pits Waynesburg against The College of New Jersey.
