Box Score
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (March 20) – The Waynesburg University softball team rolled to a 19-5 victory over Franciscan on Wednesday night, in a game that featured the team's highest run output since 2008. Ironically, the Yellow Jackets faced the Barons that same year and beat them 19-2.
The Jackets (2-8) were led by sophomore infielder
Katey Potopenko, who put together one of the greatest individual offensive efforts in recent program history by going five-for-five with a double, two homeruns, four runs scored and nine RBI. She got her day started with a two-run double that was part of a five-run first inning for the visiting team, which held a 5-0 advantage after its first at-bats. Potopenko later scored on a wild pitch.
The Steel Valley High School graduate followed with a single in the second inning, before blasting a three-run homer in the third to make the score 9-5 Jackets. The fifth inning saw Potopenko single and later score on a groundout by first baseman
Haley Payne, but it wasn't her only action of the frame. She closed the inning in style by blasting a grand slam that brought
Brittany Ellis,
Ashley Clark and
Jessica Dorazio all into score and make the score 19-5 Jackets.
Freshman infielder
Demi Lewin and senior catcher
Jessica Gavin tacked on two hits and a double each to the winning effort. Clark, Gavin, Ellis, Dorazio and senior outfielder
Jasmine Blackwell scored at least two runs each.
Sophomore
Stephanie Kotomski picked up the win in the circle after giving up three runs, all earned, over five innings of relief. She gave up five hits and one walk after striking out three opposing Barons (1-8).
The two teams squared off in a second game, which Waynesburg was leading 14-5. Unfortunately, the game was called in the fourth inning because of rain before the result could be made official. The Jackets are back in action on Friday, March 21, when they host Mount Aloysius for a twin-bill. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
