LEMONT, FURNACE, Pa. (March 22) – The Waynesburg University softball team split a pair of road games at Penn State Fayette on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets rolled to an 11-0, five-inning win in game one, before suffering through a 3-0 setback in game two.

Waynesburg (3-9) combined stellar pitching from senior Carrie Maier with an efficient offensive performance (11 runs on nine hits and four Fayette errors). Senior leftfielder Jasmine Blackwell got things going with an RBI fielder's choice that plated sophomore infielder Jessica Dorazio in the first inning.

The Jackets doubled their advantage to 2-0 in inning number two, when senior catcher Jessica Gavin tagged a sacrifice fly that plated senior infielder Madison Presto. Still leading 2-0, Waynesburg took control of the contest with a big fourth inning.

Sophomore infielder Katey Potopenko continued a torrid stretch at the plate by teeing off on her third homerun of the last two games, this one being a solo shot that put the Jackets up 3-0 in the top of the frame. Two batters later, senior outfielder Jenna Dorazio ripped a double down the left field line that scored Presto and expanded the Waynesburg advantage to 4-0. Three batters later, junior Emily Sorton got into the act with a two-run bomb that ran the score to 6-0 in favor of the visitors.

The Jackets completed perhaps its best outing of the year one inning later with the game's final five runs. Blackwell scored on an error and two batters later, with the bases loaded, junior first baseman Haley Payne crushed Waynesburg's third homerun of the day, this one a grand slam that scored Jenna Dorazio, Presto and first-year outfielder Emily Snee.

Maier improved to 2-4 in the circle by working all five innings of the victory, during which she scattered four hits and a walk, while striking out five Roaring Lions (1-3). Presto and Dorazio connected on two hits each with three and two runs scored, respectively.

The Jackets out-performed Fayette in game two in many ways, but a three-run fourth inning and a slew of stranded base-runners ultimately doomed the Orange and Black. Waynesburg put runners in scoring position in four different innings, including the fourth, when it loaded the bases with just one out on the board. Unfortunately, the Jackets were unable to break up a 0-0 tie after the Lions recorded back-to-back outs.

Fayette took advantage of its good fortune by scoring all of three of the game's runs in the bottom of the fourth. The game-deciding tally came on a solo homerun, while the other two scores were unearned.

The Jackets suffered the loss despite out-hitting their opponents seven-to-four. Presto, Payne and Jessica Dorazio recorded two hits each in game two. Freshman Lyndi Gareis suffered the loss in the circle after giving up a homerun to her first batter faced in relief of junior starterJ enn Lingg. The Ellicott City, Md. native picked up three strikeouts over three innings of work and allowed just two hits.

Waynesburg opens Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Saturday, March 29, when it travels to Thiel College to take on the Tomcats. First pitch of the twin-bill is scheduled for 1 p.m.
