GREENVILLE, Pa. (March 31) – The Waynesburg University softball team took to the road Monday afternoon to begin Presidents' Athletic Conference play by facing off with Thiel College. Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, the host Tomcats came back for a 2-1 win in game one before earning another victory in game two (12-8) for the series sweep.
Waynesburg senior pitcher
Carrie Maier and Thiel's Allison Williams went head-to-head in a low-scoring game one. The Jackets (3-11, 0-2) took the initial lead of the contest when sophomore second baseman
Jessica Dorazio tripled home junior centerfielder
Emily Sorton to make the score 1-0 in the top of the third inning.
Clinging to a one-run advantage, the Jackets entered the bottom of the seventh frame just three outs away from victory. However, the home-standing Tomcats (9-5, 2-0) got two runners to reach base and used a two-run walkoff triple to take game one in dramatic fashion.
Maier took the tough-luck loss, after surrendering just the two runs over 6 1/3 innings of work. Maier struck out six Tomcats without walking a batter. Senior catcher
Jessica Gavin collected a team-high two hits in game one.
Things started well in game two as the Jacket offense exploded for four runs in the first inning. Senior outfielder
Jasmine Blackwell laced a three-run triple to left center to clear the bases and give the Jackets a 3-0 advantage. Junior first baseman
Haley Payne added an RBI single to plate Blackwell to make it 4-0.
However, the Tomcats battled back in the top of the second and took advantage of a crucial two-out error to keep the inning alive and score eight unearned runs. Thiel added three more scores over the next few innings to go up 11-4 after the top of the fifth inning. Waynesburg finally rediscovered its offense and scored four-straight runs to cut the deficit to 11-8. Sophomore
Katey Potopenko slapped a two-run single and Payne added an RBI single as the Jackets clawed back into the contest.
Thiel put the game out of reach with a run in the seventh inning to push the lead to 12-8. The Tomcats retired the Jackets in order in the bottom of the frame to close out the day. Blackwell and Payne both put together multi-hit efforts as the Jackets totaled 10 hits in game two. Junior pitcher
Jenn Lingg took the loss, giving up eight unearned runs over 1 2/3 innings of work.
Waynesburg will be back in action when they host Thomas More on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch for the doubleheader against the Saints is slated for 3:30 p.m.
