Box Score 2 WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 9) – The Waynesburg University softball team scored its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win of the season on Wednesday when it hosted Bethany College for a doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Bison 3-1 in the opener, before falling 4-0 in game two.
Bethany (8-12, 4-2) struck first in the opener with a run in the opening frame. That early score wound up being the Green and White's only tally of the game, as sophomore starting pitcher
Stephanie Kotomski worked four solid innings in the circle.
The Yellow Jackets picked up all the offense they needed for victory in the bottom of the second frame. Senior leftfielder
Jasmine Blackwell walked to lead off the inning and was followed by sophomore
Katey Potopenko, who singled her to second. Senior catcher
Jessica Gavin added a single of her own to load the bases. A bizarre play during the at-bat of junior first baseman
Haley Payne allowed Wayneburg to tie the game up at 1-1. Payne hit a ground ball back to the pitcher, who subsequently went home to retire Blackwell. When the catcher threw down to first base to complete a double-play, the ball hit Payne in the back, which not only allowed her to take first, but gave Potopenko enough time to come around and score.
After senior third baseman
Ashley Clark walked to reload the bases, junior centerfielder
Emily Sorton slapped a go-ahead RBI single that plated Gavin and gave the home team a 2-1 edge. Waynesburg scored its third-and-final run of the afternoon on a play that was even more bizarre than the one that led to the game-tying score. With the bases still full of Jackets, sophomore shortstop
Jessica Dorazio lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield that allowed Payne to score and put her team up by two. Bethany later appealed Clark's tagging up from second to third base and won its appeal for the third out. However, the umpire upheld the Jacket run.
The two-run cushion was more than enough for Kotomski and senior
Carrie Maier, who relieved the starting hurler in the fifth inning. Maier saved Kotomski's win after scattering four hits over three shutout innings with two strikeouts.
Gavin paced the offense with a game-high two base hits. Waynesburg scored the win despite being out-hit nine-to-four.
Game two saw the Bison score the eventual game-winning run in the second inning, before adding insurance tallies in the third, fifth and sixth frames. Freshman
Lyndi Gareis suffered the loss in the circle after allowing two runs on six hits over three innings of work. Maier made her second relief effort of the day and pitched the final three frames, during which she gave up two runs, one of which was earned, with three strikeouts. Dorazio connected on two of Waynesburg's five hits in the defeat.
After finally getting play their first home games of the year, the Jackets return to road competition on Saturday, April 12, with a trip to Westminster. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
