Box Score 2 WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 13) – The Waynesburg University softball team picked up one of its biggest wins in recent program history on Sunday. It took 12 innings to pull off, but the Yellow Jackets stunned the number-one team in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) with a 4-3 walk-off victory over Thomas More in game one of a doubleheader. The Saints rebounded to split the twin-bill with a 5-2 triumph in the late contest.
The win over Thomas More (18-7, 7-1) snapped a 10-game losing streak for Waynesburg (6-18, 2-8) that stretched back to the 2008 season. Prior to Sunday, the Saints had yielded just one run over their first six conference games.
Waynesburg fell behind after Thomas More posted two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Two frames later, senior left fielder
Jasmine Blackwell broke up a perfect game for the Saints with a leadoff single. After the visiting team retired the next two batters it faced, junior first baseman
Haley Payne connected on one of the Orange and Black's biggest hits of the season: a towering two-run homer over the leftfield fence that tied the game up at 2-2.
The game stayed knotted up until the top of the 12
th, when Thomas More retook the lead at 3-2. However, the Jackets, who had come up short on some outstanding scoring opportunities, were poised to end the nearly three-hour contest.
Payne got things going with a one-out single, before being pulled for junior pinch-runner
Brittany Ellis. Senior third baseman
Ashley Clark singled Ellis to third and moved up to second base on a throw. With the stage set, junior centerfielder
Emily Sorton didn't disappoint, as she smacked a single that allowed Ellis to score. During Sorton's at-bat, Clark came all the way around to score the game-winning run thanks to an error.
A big reason for Waynesburg's historic win was senior pitcher
Carrie Maier, who relieved starter
Stephanie Kotomski prior to the start of the fifth. Maier scattered four hits and two walks over eight innings of work to secure the decision in the circle. She also struck out six Saints.
After pulling off the thrilling win in game one, Waynesburg was in position to pull off a sweep after taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two. Unfortunately, Thomas More responded to the early tally by posting the next five runs. The Jackets didn't end the scoring surge until senior
Sarah Spicher drove in senior second baseman
Madison Presto in the bottom of the sixth.
Waynesburg will look to carry the momentum over from its big victory into Tuesday's road doubleheader at Grove City College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
