Box Score 2 GROVE CITY, Pa. (April 16) – The Waynesburg University softball team traveled north to Grove City on Wednesday for a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchups against the Wolverines. The Yellow Jackets built big leads on both games, but had to settle for a split. The Jackets dropped game one 7-6, before pulling out game two 8-7.
Waynesburg (7-19, 3-9) got on the board in the top of the first inning of the opener, when junior designated player
Katey Potopenko singled in senior second baseman
Madison Presto to put the visiting team up 1-0. After Grove City (5-18, 1-11) tied things up in the second, the Yellow Jackets scored the next five runs to take control of the game.
Sophomore
Jessica Dorazio drilled a double to left-center field in the top of the fourth that allowed senior third baseman
Ashley Clark and senior catcher
Jessica Gavin to score and give the Orange and Black a 3-1 lead. The Yellow Jackets' biggest shot of game one came an inning later, when junior first baseman
Haley Payne came to the plate with junior
Brittany Ellis and senior
Jasmine Blackwell standing on the base pads. Payne connected on her second homerun over the past three games to record three more Waynesburg runs and extend the visitors' lead to 6-1.
Unfortunately, Payne's third homer of the season was the last offense Waynesburg was able to muster in the early contest. Grove City, meanwhile, found its offensive rhythm by scoring four runs in the fifth frame and two more in the sixth to grab a 7-6 edge. The Jackets put the game-tying run at second base with two outs on the board in the top of the seventh, but couldn't keep their rallying alive to tie things up.
Gavin connected on two of the Jackets' nine hits, and was one of eight Waynesburg players with at least one base knock on the day. Freshman
Lyndi Gareis started and worked all six innings in the circle for Waynesburg. She allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits and a walk.
Gave two saw all 15 of its runs scored in three half-innings. With the teams knotted up at 0-0 after three frames, the Wolverines struck for four runs in the top of the fourth. However, Waynesburg showed its resiliency and offensive potential by plating eight runs in the bottom of the frame to record all the offense it needed to preserve a split.
After loading the bases on three consecutive singles, the Jackets got on the board thanks to a two-run single by Gavin that sliced her team's deficit in half (4-2). After Payne reloaded the bases on an error and GCC picked up its first out of the inning, senior centerfielder
Shelby Tabrosky tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run double.
Jessica Dorazio gave Waynesburg its first lead of game two with a two-run double of her own that made the score 6-4 Jackets. Senior right fielder
Jenna Dorazio added to her team's advantage with an RBI double that scored her younger sister and made the score 7-4. Two batters later, Blackwell drove in the eventual game-winning run with a single that pushed the elder Dorazio across home plate and put the visitors up 8-4.
Grove City rallied with three runs in the sixth inning to reduce the Waynesburg lead down to a single score, but that was close as the Wolverines came to completing the sweep.
Presto, Blackwell and Tabrosky connected on two hits each two make up the majority of Waynesburg's 10-hit attack. Eight different Jackets scored one run each in the victory. Senior
Carrie Maier tossed a complete game in the circle and gave up just three earned runs on 10 hits and two walks. She struck out four Wolverines during her fifth win of the year.
Waynesburg returns to the diamond tomorrow for a home PAC doubleheader against Saint Vincent College. First pitch of the conference twin-bill is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
