WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 2) – With the spring season heating up, a pair of veterans posted some gaudy numbers while leading their young teams this past week. In recognition of their on-the-field efforts, senior women's lacrosse player
Toria Shepherd and junior baseball player
Ben Shorthouse took home the latest Waynesburg University Athlete of the Week honors.
Shepherd piled up six goals (three in each game) and two assists for eight total points in two matches this past week. All three of those marks were tops amongst all Yellow Jackets. With Shepherd leading the way, the Jackets split a pair of matches after beating Wilson College 16-7 on Wednesday. They nearly made program history with a third-straight win, before falling short (12-6) against a tough Capital University squad on Friday.
Shorthouse led Waynesburg's offensive charge by going four-for-five with a walk, a two-run homer, five runs scored and three RBI in the team's 16-10 victory over Saint Vincent last Friday to open up Presidents' Athletic Conference action. Shorthouse currently leads the Jackets in runs scored this season with 14.
Shepherd and her teammates will look to get back in the win column when they host Hilbert College this Friday at John F. Wiley Stadium. Start time is slated for 4 p.m. Shorthouse and the Jacket baseball team will be back in action on Friday at home against Geneva for a nine-inning matchup. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
