Box Score 2 PITTSBURGH, Pa. (April 8) – The Waynesburg University softball team upset La Roche College during the second half of its doubleheader with the host Redhawks on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets dropped the opener 8-0, before rebounding with a 9-8 victory in game two.
Waynesburg (4-14) snapped a six-game losing streak with their win in the late contest at La Roche (6-6), thanks in large part to fast start that featured a three-run first inning. Sophomore
Samantha Pillar opened the scoring with an RBI groundout that scored freshman infielder
Ashley Demarco. Senior third baseman
Ashley Clark doubled the Jackets' advantage to 2-0 with a fielder's choice RBI that brought freshman
Emily Snee across home plate. Junior
Katelyn Smith concluded the early scoring with an RBI single that brought in senior outfielder
Jasmine Blackwell.
The Redhawks tied the game at 3-3 after dropping three runs in the bottom of the first and took their first lead of the contest with a four-spot in their half of the second. The Orange and Black rediscovered its offense in the top of the fourth, when it took advantage of three La Roche errors en route to five runs. Freshman
Demi Lewin scored the first tally of the frame when Snee reached on an error. Another miscue by the home team during the at-bat of junior
Emily Sorton allowed junior
Theresa Soknich to trim La Roche's advantage down to 7-5. A sacrifice fly by Pillar closed the gap to a single run, before Clark's groundout plated Snee and tied things up at 7-7. Waynesburg regained the lead at 8-7 when Sorton scored on an error during Smith's at-bat.
The home team tied the game at 8-8 after scoring its final run of the day during the bottom of the fourth. However, the opportunistic Jackets were able to pull out the victory when sophomore
Jessica Dorazio scored the eventual game-winning run on a La Roche error during the at-bat of freshman
Demi Lewin in the top of the seventh inning.
The Hawks had one last chance at extending the contest after leading off the bottom of the seventh with a double. However, senior pitcher
Carrie Maier was able to induce two strikeouts sandwiched around a popup on the infield that preserved the Jacket victory.
Four different Jacket hitters recorded a combined two hits each over the doubleheader split, while Demarco and Snee scored a team-high two runs each. Clark and Pillar both recorded two-RBI afternoons.
Maier came in to both games as a relief pitcher and worked 5.1 innings in the circle. She gave up one run on three hits and a walk, while racking up an impressive 10 strikeouts. She picked up the late-game victory after tossing three shutout innings, during which she allowed just one hit and one walk. The Greensburg, Pa. native punched out six La Roche batters during her third win of the year.
The Jackets get back to President's Athletic Conference (PAC) action tomorrow, when they play host to Bethany College for a seven-inning doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
