WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Aug. 30) – It took a lot of sweat and effort, but the Waynesburg University women's tennis team opened the 2014 season with a hard fought 5-4 home win over Pitt Greensburg on Friday.

Waynesburg ultimately took the victory by winning two-of-three doubles matches against the Bobcats. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead by taking the second and third flights. Junior Emily McDonold teamed up with senior Ellen Limback to score the Jackets' first win of 2014, which was an 8-3 decision at the number-two spot. Shortly thereafter, senior Madison DuBrock and junior Rachel Wilson combined to post an 8-4 triumph at the number-three slot.

The host team nearly made it a clean doubles sweep, but junior Rachel Klemash and senior Alyssa Daniel came up just short in a closely contested 9-8 matchup at the number-one slot .

Senior Lauren Cowden got the Jackets back on the winning track with an impressive 6-2, 6-1 victory at sixth singles. However, UPG responded with back-to-back victories at third and fourth singles to tie the match at 3-3.

Waynesburg pulled out the win thanks to strong showings from DuBrock and Klemash, who won their respective singles contests as afternoon turned into evening. DuBrock won a straight-set match at fifth singles 6-4, 6-4, but the Bobcats wouldn't give up and tied the match score back up at 4-4 with a win at the number-two spot. Klemash made up for her heart-breaking setback at first doubles by gutting out a 6-4, 4-6 1 (10-7) match-deciding win. It was the only contest of the day that went to three sets.

The Jackets will look to keep their winning ways going on Wednesday, Sept. 3, when they travel to Cresson, Pa. for a match with Mount Aloysius. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
