Women's soccer suffers first loss of 2014

Jackets jump out to 1-0 lead, but two late goals result in 2-1 defeat

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Sept. 12) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team tasted defeat for the first time this year when they traveled to Capital University. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early lead on a strong Crusader team, but couldn't hold it in a 2-1 setback.

Waynesburg (3-1-1) lit up the scoreboard first when junior Karleigh Murphey took a pass from senior Becky Hotek and found the back of the net from 15 yards out and beat the Capital (4-1) keeper for a 1-0 lead. The score came in the 21st minute of the first half.

After maintaining its lead for almost 58 minutes, Waynesburg finally allowed an equalizer just before the 80-minute mark. Unfortunately, Capital needed just under nine more minutes to pound in the eventual game-winning score with just over two minutes showing on the scoreboard clock.

Murphey took three of Waynesburg's five shots on goal.

The Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 17, when they host Marietta College. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
