Men's soccer survives wild game with Bluffton

Yellow Jackets come out on top of physical overtime contest

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 27) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team found itself in a heated battle with the visiting Beavers of Bluffton University on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets survived an overtime contest that featured a combined 10 yellow and red cards and an ejection on both sides of the field to pick up a 4-3 victory.

Both teams came out firing as Waynesburg (4-4-2) senior Cody Lemke scored just 1:15 into the contest after taking a feed from freshman Bryan Sontag. Bluffton (2-7) tied the game up at 1-1 just 18 seconds later.

Jacket senior Colin Nelson gave his team the lead back at 2-1 during the 12th minute off a penalty kick. However, the Beavers were ready with another answer, this time finding the back of the net with just 19 seconds remaining in the first half.

After going into halftime with the score tied up at 2-2, momentum swung back into the home team's favor when sophomore Chad Palucka beat the Bluffton keeper to put Waynesburg back in the lead. Unfortunately, the Jackets let Bluffton back into the game with an own goal during the 60th minute that eventually pushed the contest into overtime.

The Jackets did a nice job of applying immediate and almost constant offensive pressure that eventually led to a breakaway game-winning goal from sophomore Zack Benedict that was set up by junior Brio Davis.

Three Waynesburg keepers combined on the victory, with junior Cam Allen picking up his first win of the year. Allen played the final 15:04 of the game and stopped all three shots on goal.

The Yellow Jackets get back to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 30, when they play host to Frostburg State. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
