Men's soccer shuts out Franciscan

Yellow Jackets impress during 5-0 win in front of home crowd

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 2) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team won its first game under first-year head coach Brad Heethuis by taking down Franciscan University on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets never trailed in front of the crowd at John F. Wiley Stadium and picked up a 5-0 victory over the Barons.
 
After a scoreless first half, Waynesburg (1-0-2) junior Victor Browne fired in the eventual game-winning goal 34 seconds into the second period. Eight minutes later, sophomore Joey Buchanan doubled his team's lead at 2-0. Senior Cody Lemke assisted on both tallies.
 
Senior Nick Brommer ran his team's advantage to 3-0 during the 58th minute of action. Just 1:24 later, senior Colin Nelson buried goal number four of the day for the Yellow Jackets, before junior Connor Walsh ended the scoring with eight minutes remaining in the contest.
 
Senior goalkeeper Brandon Daughtry got the start in net and made six saves over 75:47 of work. Junior Nathan Ribar played the remainder of the win and added a save of his own.
 
Several key game stats reflected the 5-0 final score. Waynesburg out-shot the Barons (1-1-1) by a 20-to-seven margin, and held a 12-to-three edge in corner kicks.
 
The Jackets are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 6, when they travel to La Roche. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
