Box Score Box Score BETHANY, W.Va. (Feb. 14) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team braved the harsh winter weather and survived a tremendous effort from Bethany College to score a historic 69-67 victory over the host Bison. The win allowed Yellow Jacket head coach
Sam Jones to become the first 100-game winner in program history. Jones' career mark improved to 100-87 as the leader of the Jackets.
The first half of the contest played out over 20 minutes of back-and-forth basketball, with the lead changing hands six times and the score being tied on seven different occasions. Trailing 30-29 with 3:17 left to play in the opening period, the Jackets (13-10, 10-6) ended the first 20 minutes of play on a 7-1 run that was capped by a free throw from junior forward
Maura Bobby with 32 seconds showing on the clock. By the time the buzzer sounded for the break, the Orange and Black held a 36-31 advantage.
Senior guard
Rebecca Kerr extended her team's lead to 38-31 with a layup to open the second half. Waynesburg built its advantage up to as many eight points in the opening minutes of the period, before Bethany (12-11, 8-8) pulled to within two points (46-44) with just under 12 minutes left to play.
The Bison never trailed by more than eight points over the remainder of the contest, but Waynesburg did a solid job of answering Bethany buckets with points of its own to seal the win. Bethany nearly sent the game into overtime, but a pair of contested Bison layups missed their marks as the final buzzer of the game sounded.
The Jackets were led by Kerr, who poured in a team-high 17 points. Forwards
Rachel Lovely and
Addy Knetzer came off the bench to tally 12 and 10 points, respectively. The pair also tied sophomore
Haley Delaney for the team lead in rebounds with seven boards each. Junior guard
Lauren Blair dished out a team-high six assists, while Kerr tied for the game lead with four steals. The Jacket defense forced Bethany into 26 turnovers.
The win was Waynesburg's third-straight, and the team's fifth in its last six games. The Jackets will try to keep their victorious ways going on Wednesday, Feb. 18, when they host Geneva. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
