Box Score BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Oct. 15) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team found itself with a 1-0 halftime deficit during Saturday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup at Geneva. However, the Yellow Jacket offense exploded with three goals in the span of seven minutes to pick up a 3-2 victory.
With the win, the Jackets (5-8-1, 2-3) are just two games out of a playoff spot in the PAC standings. The victory also ended a three-game losing streak for the Orange and Black.
After falling into its early hole, Waynesburg put together one of its most impressive offensive outbursts of the season. Junior
Sam Nichols tied the game by finding the back of the net in the 52
nd minute of play.
The Jackets really got rolling in the 59
th minute, when they scored twice in the span of two seconds. Sophomore
Natalie Fortna stole the show on Saturday by first giving her team the lead 59:28 into the match. Almost immediately following her first of the day, Fortna struck again, this team logging the eventual game winner off an assist from freshman
Emma Gozzard at 59:30 of the contest.
Geneva cut into Waynesburg's momentum 26 seconds later with its second score of the day to cut the visiting team's lead down to 3-2. However, the Jackets were able to settle things down and complete the win.
The game was as statistically close as the final score. Geneva out-shot Waynesburg 9-8, but the Jackets held a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Both squads attempted two corner kicks, including one each in the first and second periods.
Freshman
Courtney Syfert started and got the win in net after stopping three-of-five shots on goal over 62:34 of play. Junior
Heather Fraser finished out the game and didn't face a shot on goal.
Waynesburg returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 19. The Jackets host Saint Vincent for a 6 p.m. contest.
