Series Breakdown
All-Time Series: Geneva leads 44-31-4
First Meeting: 1908 (Waynesburg won 5-0)
Last Meeting: 2015 (Geneva won 41-24)
Â
- Waynesburg will look to bounce back from last year'17-point loss to the Golden Tornadoes. That defeat ended the Yellow Jackets' five-game winning streak against Geneva.
Â
- Waynesburg junior defensive lineman Brad Grinnen is the reigning PAC Defensive Player of the Week. He received the award after piling up seven total tackles, six of which were solo stops. Grinnen also moved into a tie for first place in the conference with sacks five, six and seven on the year.
Â
- Waynesburg junior linebacker Tristan Sandrosky was named to the latest D3Football.com Team of the Week. The native of nearby Uniontown, Pennsylvania, piled up 13 tackles, 11 of which were solo stops. Sandrosky also posted two tackles in the backfield against Grove City.
Â
- Geneva senior linebacker John Fiscus was also honored earlier this year as a PAC Defensive Player of the Week. Fiscus picked up the award after helping leading his team to victory over Bethany back on Sept. 10. The veteran racked up nine tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble.
Â
- If recent history is any indicator, fans should expect plenty of scoring in Saturday's matchup. Over the past five seasons, Waynesburg and Geneva games have produced an average of 62.6 combined points per game. The two rivals combined for 80 points in 2011 and 82 in an overtime game in 2014.
Â
- This year's game could certainly change that trend. Waynesburg and Geneva rank 11th and eighth, respectively in scoring offense, as well as 11th and ninth in total offense.
Â
- The two biggest points to a triple-option like the one employed by Geneva are to pile up rushing yards and control time of possession. The Golden Tornadoes are having no problem accomplishing those two goals this fall. Geneva ranks third in the PAC in rushing yards per game (260.8) and first in time of possession per game (34:40).
Â
- Lost in the intrigue surrounding Geneva's change in offensive philosophy has been a marked improvement in the team's defense. After giving 33.2 points and 389.9 yards per game in 2015, the Golden Tornadoes come into Saturday allowing just 21.5 points and 299.2 yards per contest.
Â
- Despite freshmen like Ta'Vaughn Johnson and Mike Krenn playing bigger and bigger roles in the special teams, Waynesburg is among the PAC leaders in terms of punt and kick returns. The Jackets rank second in kick return average (24.4 ypr) and fourth in punt return average (11.8 ypr). One of the few teams Waynesburg looks up to in terms of the standings is Geneva, which sports the top punt return average in the league (14.0).
Â
- Speaking of special teams, both the Jackets and Golden Tornadoes sport similar results in terms of the kicking game. Both teams are among a group of just four schools to convert all of their PAT attempts in 2016. However, they have also combined for just two successful field goal tries in seven attempts.
Â
- Waynesburg's stay at the top of the conference rankings for sacks may be a short-lived one. This is not a slight against the Jacket defense, which has dropped opposing quarterbacks 18 times this year. Rather, with Geneva only throwing the ball 3.25 times per game, there simply won't be many opportunities to increase the season total.
