WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 16) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team hosted its first home dual match of the 2016-17 season on Wednesday night, when Division II West Liberty came to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The two squads battled back and forth until sophomore heavyweight
Jake Evans closed out the 24-19 win.
Evans, who came into the night ranked 10
th in the country by D3Wrestle.com, led from start to finish in his bout before picking up a 10-2 major decision with the assistance of a riding point. The victory was Waynesburg's (1-1) sixth of the night.
Junior
Tristan Buxton started the night with a forfeit at 125 pounds, but West Liberty (1-2) rebounded with a pin at 133 to tie the score at 6-6. The high scoring continued at 141 pounds, where senior
Filippo Crivelli notched 19-2 technical fall in 5:23 to give the Jackets the lead back at 11-6. The Hilltoppers picked up their first lead of the evening with a forfeit at 149 pounds.
With his team trailing 12-11, sophomore
Matt Claxton posted one of the biggest wins of the night with a 10-4 decision at 157 pounds. The Orange and Black made it two in a row at 165 pounds, where junior
Landon Lohr gutted out a 4-1 decision.
Trailing 17-12, West Liberty rebounded with a major decision at 174, before Jacket senior
Ryan Shank recorded a 9-2 decision at 184.
The Hilltoppers scored their final points of the night at 197 pounds. Freshman
Kenneth Burrs started the bout out well for Waynesburg with a takedown and two near-fall points to go up 4-0. The Jacket newcomer battled back-and-forth with his opponent and the score was tied 8-8 late in the third period. West Liberty's Logan Kemp pulled out the win with a late takedown and near fall points to cut his team's deficit down to 20-19, before Evans sealed up the victory.
Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 19, when they take part in the Mount Union Duals. Wrestling starts at 10 a.m.
