Jackets drop one at St. Vincent

Waynesburg falls 30-12

Box Score LATROBE, Pa. (Nov. 5) – The Waynesburg University football team traveled to Saint Vincent on Saturday for its final road game of 2016. Though the Yellow Jackets held noticeable advantages in multiple statistical categories, turnovers ultimately spelled doom for the Jackets in a 30-12 loss.

Waynesburg (2-7, 2-5) fell behind 10-0 after the first 8:36 of play, but were able to avoid being shut out in the first quarter thanks to a 22-yard field goal from freshman Mike Ryhal with 14 seconds remaining in the period. The Bearcats (5-4, 3-4) extended their advantage to 16-3 with 3:05 left to play in the first half, but the Jackets were able to minimize the damage by blocking the extra point attempt.

Ryhal opened the second-half scoring with his second successful field goal of the day, this one come from a distance of 28 yards and cutting the deficit to 16-6 with 9:47 remaining in the third quarter. Unfortunately, the Jacket momentum was halted by Saint Vincent's third touchdown of the day coming just before the conclusion of the period.

Trailing 23-6, Waynesburg finally found the end zone when freshman quarterback Aaron Jenkins hooked up with classmate Ta'Vaughn Johnson on a seven-yard scoring pass. The touchdown was recorded with just under seven minutes remaining in the contest.

Waynesburg outrushed its opposition by a 107-93 margin and picked up 24 first downs, while holding the home team to just 14 on the afternoon. The Jackets also ran 13 more plays (75-62) and only committed three penalties for 23 yards. Saint Vincent was flagged 12 times for 110 yards. A pair of interceptions hampered the Orange and Black's efforts. The visiting team also failed to convert on all three of its fourth-down conversion attempts.

Freshman Tyler Perone started and completed 16-of-32 passes for 208 yards before being lifted midway through the third quarter for Jenkins. He hit on five-of-11 attempts for 52 yards, while also carrying the ball 12 times for a game-high 64 yards.

Sophomore cornerback Justin Willkow led the Waynesburg defense with a game-high seven tackles, all of which were solo stops. Senior defensive lineman Zach Machuga added five stops and half a sack.

Waynesburg wraps up its 2016 season on Saturday, Nov. 12, when it hosts Washington and Jefferson for senior day. The annual showdown, which has been dubbed the "Backyard Brawl" as part of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Rivalry Week, will kick off at 1:30 p.m.
