WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 20) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team welcomed Franciscan to John F. Wiley Stadium on Monday. The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie by the time regulation had expired, and the game needed not one, but two overtime periods before the Barons managed to notch the game winner.
Franciscan (4-2-1) opened the scoring in the 13
th minute to take a 1-0 lead it was able to maintain until halftime. Waynesburg (2-5) battled for 65 minutes to tie the game at 1-1. The Yellow Jackets finally achieved that goal in the 78
th minute when senior
Josh Hennigh took a feed from freshman
Justin Buberl and beat the opposing keeper with the game-tying tally.
The score stayed knotted at 1-1 through the remainder of regulation and after the first 10-minute overtime period. Unfortunately, Franciscan managed to get a breakaway 27 seconds into overtime number two and beat Jacket keeper
James Snyder for the deciding score.
Despite suffering the loss, Snyder performed well in net. The sophomore made five saves, including a memorable sliding kick save in the second half to help keep Waynesburg's hopes for victory alive.
The Jackets return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24, with a road game at Marietta. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
