Series Breakdown
All-Time Series: Tied 1-1
First Meeting: 2014 (Waynesburg won 35-15)
Last Meeting: 2015 (Case Western Reserve won 45-14)
Â
Freshman Patrick Crossey was named PAC Rookie of the Week after leading the Case Western Reserve defense with six stops in Saturday's shutout win at Grove City. Making the first start of his collegiate career in the Spartan secondary, he totaled five solo tackles, including 1.0 for a loss, while forcing a fumble and breaking up a pass.
Â
Senior wide receiver Brendan Lynch becomes the second Spartan this season to be named to the D3football.com Team of the Week and the UAA Athlete of the Week, joining sophomore Justin Phan, who claimed both honors as a punt returner on September 6
th. Lynch picked up the honors after pulling in nine receptions for 222 yards and three touchdowns during Waynesburg's 55-0 victory over Grove City.
Â
Case Western Reserve turned in one of the most dominant performances in recent PAC history during its victory over the Wolverines. The Spartans held GCC to 136 yards of total offense (62 rushing) and just six first downs. CWRU also possessed the football for an impressive 38:55 and allowed GCC to convert on just one of 16 third down conversion attempts.
Â
Case comes into Saturday's game leading the PAC in scoring offense (50.0 ppg) and average score differential (41.5 ppg), while also ranking second in scoring defense (8.5 ppg). Similarly, the Spartans rank first amongst conference teams in total offense (523.5 ypg) and second in total defense (219.0 ypg).
Â
While Case Western Reserve has proven to be effective on both sides of the line of scrimmage, Waynesburg appears to have the advantage on its latest opponent when it comes to the kick return game. The Jackets currently rank second in the PAC in terms of kick return average (27.5 ypr), while the Spartans currently hold the 11
th spot at 14.4 yards per return. However, Case bests the league in punt return average (18.9 ypg) and is one of just two teams with a return touchdown this season. Waynesburg currently sits in the number-seven spot with a 6.6 yard per return average.
Â
Jacket defensive coordinator
Scott Venick will need to have his defense ready for the Spartans, particularly when it comes to third down situations. Case has converted an impressive 58.1 percent of its attempts, which is tops in the PAC and eighth in all of Division III. Waynesburg, on the other hand, is looking to find its way in similar situations. The Jackets are at the bottom of the conference rankings at 22.7 percent.
Â
Case quarterback Rob Cuda is one of three quarterbacks in the PAC's top 10 rushing rankings. He is eighth in the list thanks to a 68.5 ypg average. He trails Thiel's Ryan Radke and Westminster's Paul Columbo. Cuda leads the trio in passing average, however, by piling up 277.0 yards per game.
