WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 25) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team put up a strong effort against the defending Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) from Geneva on Wednesday night. Unfortunately, the Golden Tornadoes broke through for two second-half goals to score a 3-1 victory.
The Yellow Jackets (5-8-2, 3-4) wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard. Junior
Sam Almeter gave his team the early lead off an assist from freshman
Cam Sutherland in the seventh minute of action.
Geneva (12-3-2, 6-1-1) tied the contest at 1-1 10 minutes later and the two conference rivals stayed knotted up throughout the remainder of the first period. Unfortunately, the visiting team notched the eventual game-winning goal with 21:12 showing on the scoreboard. The GT's added an insurance tally on a penalty kick during the 87
th minute.
Freshman
Adam Dolan started for Waynesburg and played all 90 minutes in net. He stopped five-of-eight shots on goal during the Jackets' home finale.
Despite the loss, Waynesburg still controls its own destiny when it comes to qualifying for the upcoming four-team PAC tournament. If the Yellow Jackets can defeat Washington & Jefferson in Saturday's regular season finale, they will finish no worse than in a tie for the fourth-and-final playoff spot with Westminster. The Jackets would qualify for the postseason thanks to their 4-3 win over the Titans back on Oct. 3. A Waynesburg draw with W&J could also lead to a playoff spot, but the Jackets would need a loss or a draw from Bethany, as well as a Westminster defeat.
Start time between the Jackets and Presidents is set for 1 p.m.
