Series Breakdown
All-Time Series: Waynesburg leads 18-13-4
First Meeting: 1929 (Saint Vincent won 19-6)
Last Meeting: 2016 (Saint Vincent won 30-12)
Â
Saturday is senior day for the Yellow Jackets, as 16 seniors will walk onto John F. Wiley Stadium for the last time as members of the Waynesburg football team. Athletic training, cheerleading and pep band seniors will also be honored prior to kickoff.
Â
Waynesburg ended its 11-game losing streak this past Saturday with a 34-7 win over Thiel. Saint Vincent will try to end its current five-game skid, which stretches back to Sept. 16.
Â
Waynesburg freshman wide receiver JaWuan Jones received plenty of attention for his 84-yard punt return for a touchdown that opened the scoring against the Tomcats on Saturday. Jones was honored as the PAC Special Teams Player of the Week, was listed on the D3Football.com Team of the Week as a returner and was co-ECAC Division III South Rookie of the Week.
Â
The Yellow Jacket offense went all-in on establishing and relying upon its running game on Saturday. Waynesburg ran the ball 65 times, while attempting just five passes. Thanks to this run-happy approach, the Jackets piled up 284 yards on the ground, their highest single-game total since 2012.
Â
Three different Waynesburg players rushed for at least 82 yards in the win. Sophomore Chad Walker led the charge with a team-high 104 yards on 16 carries, while senior running back Austin Wilson chipped in 84 yards on 19 totes. Junior quarterback Jake Dougherty added 82 yards on 21 touches. The trio combined to score four of the team's five touchdowns.
Â
Speaking of Dougherty, he made his first start under center since suffering a major injury on Sept. 17, 2016. He had spent time as a starting wide receiver this year before moving back to quarterback.
Â
The Jackets' 27-point margin of victory was their largest since a 35-0 shutout at Grove City on Oct. 4, 2014.
Â
Thanks in part to holding the football for 37:35 against Thiel, Waynesburg has vaulted into the top half of the PAC in terms of time of possession. The Jackets' 29:39 average is good for fifth in the standings.
Â
Despite three different quarterbacks seeing significant time on the field for Saint Vincent, senior Damon Black Jr. has been one of the top wide receivers in the PAC this year. He comes into Saturday leading the league in catches per game (8.4) and ranking third in receiving yards per contest (90.2).
Â
One of those three signal callers, sophomore Michael Navarro still ranks sixth in the PAC in yards per game (181.9) and fourth in total completions (113).
Â
Despite its breakout game against Thiel, the Waynesburg running game still has plenty of space to climb up the PAC ladder in terms of rushing per game. The Jackets' 111.9 yards per contest have them ahead of just one team: Saint Vincent. The Bearcats are cranking out just 102.6 yards per contest.
