Softball plays two at Spring Games

Waynesburg falls to Adrian and RHIT

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. (Feb. 27) – The Waynesburg University softball team continued its run in The Spring Games by playing a pair of contests on Monday. The Yellow Jackets battled, but dropped a 4-3 final score to Adrian in the early contest, before falling 9-1 in five innings against the Rose Hulman Institute of Technology.

The Jackets (1-3) took a 1-0 lead in game one thanks to a little help from the Bulldogs (1-2). After loading the bases with two outs, freshman second baseman Ashley Dubovich was hit by a pitch that pushed sophomore first baseman Alex Lawrence across home plate.

Waynesburg's slim advantage lasted until the bottom of the fourth, when Adrian tied the game 1-1. The Dogs grabbed their first lead of the game (3-1) in the fifth thanks to a pair of runs off sophomore pitcher Courtney Messenger.

Facing its final three outs in the top of the seventh, the Jackets were able to find their offense just in time to tie the game up. Dubovich led off with the double and moved to third two batters later on a single by sophomore shortstop Keri Renzler. Freshman outfielder Rachel Skon lifted a sacrifice fly into left field that brought Dubovich home, making the score 3-2. With two outs on the board, Lawrence came through in the clutch with an RBI double that knotted the score at 3-3.

The game eventually moved into extra innings, where the international tiebreaker rule put a runner on second base to start the frame. Unfortunately, Waynesburg went down in order, keeping the score at 3-3. The Bulldogs were able to bring the winning run home in its half of the eighth.

Sophomore Courtney Messenger suffered the loss in the circle after allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings. She also recorded four strikeouts on the day. Senior Lyndi Gareis tossed the final inning.

Lawrence led the Waynesburg offense with a two-for-four morning at the plate with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Five other Jackets collected one hit each in the loss.

Game two saw the Orange and Black jump out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI double by Dubovich that scored Skon. Unfortunately, the Engineers (2-0) took the lead with three runs in the top of the second inning, before tacking on three more in the third. Rose Hulman wrapped up the win with a final three-spot in the top of the fifth.

Sophomore Cat Allstatt took the loss after giving up six runs, four of which were earned, over three innings in the circle. Senior Lyndi Gareis worked the final two frames of the loss.

Four different Jackets recorded one hit each against the Engineers.

Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday with games against Concordia (Minn.) and Finlandia. First pitch of the day is scheduled to be thrown at 9:30 a.m.
