Series Breakdown
All-Time Series: Waynesburg leads 18-10
First Meeting: 1904 (Muskingum won 33-5)
Last Meeting: 2016 (Muskingum won 17-16)
Â
Saturday kicks off the 114
th season of Waynesburg University football. It is the beginning of the 122
nd season for Muskingum.
Â
The Yellow Jacket football program opens a new chapter in its existence as interim head coach
Chris Smithley takes over the reins. He spent 2016 as the team's offensive coordinator following four years at Washington & Jefferson.
Â
This is the sixth-straight season in which Waynesburg and Muskingum have opened their respective schedules against each other. The Jackets had won five-straight against the Muskies prior to last year's one-point defeat.
Â
One Waynesburg camp battle that drew a lot of attention was a two-man race between
Jake Dougherty and
Tyler Perone, both of which have extensive starting experience. Perone won the job, but Smithley and his staff saw enough athletic ability out of Dougherty to put him at the top of the depth chart at wide receiver.
Â
One player to keep an eye on is Jacket left tackle
Alex Paulina, who transferred to Waynesburg following two years with the University of Pittsburgh football team. It won't be easy to miss Paulina, who stands 6-4 and weighs in at 335 pounds.
Â
Muskingum head coach Al Logan hasn't had to learn too many new names on his team, as 19 starters, including 10 on defense, have returned from last year's 4-6 team. Logan will need to find a replacement for do-it-all quarterback Griffin Degener, who passed for 1,488 yards and rushed for a 193. He tallied 12 total touchdowns, 10 of which were through the year, while only being intercepted four times.
