WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 19) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team played host to Pitt Greensburg on Tuesday night. The Yellow Jackets built a 2-0 lead, but couldn't maintain it, as they wound up settling for a 2-2 double-overtime tie with the Bobcats.
Waynesburg (1-3-2) opened the scoring just 10 minutes into the game thanks to a goal from sophomore
Nate Kummer. The Yellow Jackets seemed to take firm control of the contest just under six minutes later, when freshman
Thomas Drake tallied his team-leading third goal of the year. Sophomore
Nate Biondi assisted on the tally, which came late in the 15
th minute of play.
The Jackets maintained their multi-goal lead past halftime and into the 64
th minute, when UPG (2-4-1) broke the shutout. The home team still seemed poised for victory as the final minutes of regulation ticked off the scoreboard. Unfortunately for Waynesburg, the Bobcats notched the game-evening point with just 54 seconds showing on the clock.
The Orange and Black controlled all 20 minutes of extra time, outshooting the visitors by a 10-0 margin. The Jackets also attempted the only two shots on goal of the overtime periods.
Waynesburg outshot UPG 20-12 on the night and held a slim 7-6 edge in shots on goal. The Jackets were further challenged by a chippy Bobcat squad, which committed 19 fouls.
Junior
James Snyder started and played all 110 minutes in net for Waynesburg. He made four saves over a long night in goal.
The Jackets are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 23, when they host Transylvania. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
