GROVE CITY, Pa. (Oct. 20) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team locked horns with Grove City on Saturday in a heated Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match. The Yellow Jackets stayed competitive with the Wolverines, but came up just short of an upset in a 2-1 setback.
Grove City (11-1-4, 4-0-1) opened the scoring with a goal in the 38
th minute. The Yellow Jackets (5-9, 2-4) wasted little time in responding to the GCC challenge. Junior
Dante Ohm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills) found the back of the net just 23 seconds later off an assist from senior
Sam Almeter (Monroeville, Pa. / Serra Catholic).
The score stayed tied throughout the remainder of the first half, but the home team tallied the eventual game-winning goal at the 57:59 mark of the game. The Jackets mounted one final rally after a weather delay that included two corner kicks and a pair of shots. Unfortunately, none of the tries resulted in a second goal and Waynesburg suffered the loss.
Freshman
Jonathan Campbell (Fredericksburg, Va. / James Monroe) got the nod as the starting goalkeeper and turned in maybe his best effort as a collegian. He stopped six-of-eight shots on goal over a complete-game effort.
Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 24, when it travels to Beaver Falls to face Geneva. Start time is scheduled for 8:45 p.m.
