GREENVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 25) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team will have plenty on the line when it hosts Washington & Jefferson for Saturday's regular season finale.
After tying Geneva 3-3 on Wednesday night, the Yellow Jackets still find themselves in contention for a spot in the four-team Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tournament. Below is information from the conference outlining just how the Jackets can still get in to the postseason:
"After playing to a 3-3 regular season head-to-head tie, Geneva and Waynesburg would end up going to goal differential if Waynesburg defeats W&J Saturday, which would result in Waynesburg and Geneva being tied with 10 points each (again, Bethany wins HTH tiebreaker with both teams even if they lose to SVC). Currently, Geneva is a plus-two (13-11) in conference scoring differential with their league schedule completed, while Waynesburg is currently a minus-one (11-12) with the W&J match remaining. Thus, Waynesburg can clinch a tournament berth with a win over W&J by four-plus goals, which would put them at plus-three. If Waynesburg would defeat W&J by one or two goals (leaving them at even or plus-one on the season), Geneva wins the goal differential tiebreaker. If Waynesburg defeats W&J by three goals, then in addition to HTH tie both teams also tie in conference goal differential, with both Geneva and Waynesburg each at plus-two. In that scenario, the next tiebreaker would be 'goals for' in conference matches, which would be won by Waynesburg (14-13)."
Saturday, which also serves as senior day, opens with the Waynesburg women, who have been eliminated from the playoffs, facing their counterparts from W&J at 1 p.m. The men will follow with a scheduled 3 p.m. starting time.
NOTE: A previous release had the Waynesburg men being eliminated from postseason contention with their tie at Geneva. This was incorrect and has been clarified by the PAC.
