WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 3) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team hosted La Roche on a steamy Monday evening at John F. Wiley Stadium on Monday for a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest. The game turned into a wild offensive shootout between the two squads and by the time the final whistle blew, the Yellow Jackets came away with a 6-3 victory.
The game was originally scheduled to be played this past Saturday, but lightning-producing storms around the Waynesburg area caused enough delays to have the game moved to Monday. The Yellow Jackets (1-1) led 1-0 at halftime on Monday before the game was called due to the dangerous weather conditions.
The six-goal output was Waynesburg's biggest since scoring seven goals in a game multiple times in 2013. That was also the same year the Yellow Jackets last defeated the Redhawks (0-1), ending a three-game losing streak.
La Roche (0-1) opened the scoring during the ninth minute of play on a penalty kick. Of the six goals given up by the Yellow Jackets this season, three have been on PK's.
Roughly nine and a half minutes later, Waynesburg began its offensive barrage on the visiting team with two goals 24 seconds apart. Sophomore
Daniel Hott got the equalizer late in the 18
th minute off an assist from senior
Tyler Sisler. The Jackets took their first lead of the day on its next possession, which was capped by Sisler finding the back of the net and giving his team a 2-1 advantage.
Waynesburg reloaded and extended its lead to 3-1 early in the 24
th minute when junior
Justin Buberl headed in a corner kick from senior
Matt Hlasnick. The Jackets looked poised to run away with the win, but the visiting team put together a strong final 11 minutes to the half to tie the game at 3-3 before the break. The Orange and Black looked like it was going to get to the break with a 3-2 edge, but La Roche scored off a deep free kick to the knot the score.
After an offense-filled first 45 minutes, both teams switched goalies to start period number two, with Waynesburg bringing in freshman
Jonathan Campbell. The change didn't deter the Yellow Jacket offense, which took the lead for good midway through the 52
nd minute. Sophomore
Steven Haines managed to bury a loose ball into the back of the net to make the score 4-3.
Eight minutes later, sophomore
Cam Sutherland became the fifth player in Orange and Black to score thanks to an assist from Hott. Just 28 seconds later, junior
Nate Biondi put the finishing touches on one of Waynesburg's wildest wins in recent history. Freshman
Dom Lamberto set up the score for his first collegiate assist.
The offensive flurry on both sides subsided over the final 29:15, as Waynesburg closed out the victory. By the time the dust settled, Waynesburg had outshot the opposition by a 22-6 margin. The Jackets also out-did La Roche 15-5 in shots on goal and attempted12 corner kicks to the Hawks' one try.
Campbell got the win after logging 20 minutes in net during which he didn't face a shot on goal. An injury sent Campbell back to the sideline and returned sophomore starter
Adam Dolan. Dolan made a pair of saves over his final 25 minutes of work. He logged 70 total minutes on the evening.
The Yellow Jackets begin a six-game road trip on Friday, Sept. 7, with a game at Ohio Wesleyan. Start time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
