Men's soccer ties top team in the PAC

Late goals lead to 2-2 draw with Westminster

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 19) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team hosted Westminster on Saturday night at John F. Wiley Stadium. After falling behind early to the top team in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), the Yellow Jackets showed their mettle by coming back and earning a 2-2 draw with the Titans.

Westminster (8-5-2, 3-0-2) built a 2-0 lead in the 49th and 54th minutes, respectively. With just over 35 minutes remaining in regulation, the Yellow Jackets could have given up the fight, but instead kept their cool and kept the pressure on the Titans.

Waynesburg finally broke through for its first goal of the night with just five minutes remaining on the scoreboard clock. Senior Nate Biondi (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) got his team on the board by finding a bouncing ball in the 18-yard box and burying it in the back of the net to make the score 2-1.

The Jackets' offensive pressure got to Westminster yet again late in the 88th minute. As the home team worked for an equalizer, the Titans committed a costly foul inside the 18-yard box that led to a Waynesburg penalty kick. Senior Nate Kummer (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills) got the honors and buried the attempt behind the visiting keeper, tying the score at 2-2. Regulation ended with neither team scoring again, moving the contest into overtime.

The Titans outshot the Jackets 5-2 in the extra 20 minutes of play, but the Waynesburg defense made sure none of them reached the goal. The Jackets had a shot to pull out the upset win, but a shot on goal from junior Cam Sutherland (Millville, Mass. / Whitinsville Christian) was turned away by the opposing keeper in the 104th minute.

Junior Adam Dolan (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) started and played all 110 minutes in net for Waynesburg. He did his part in preserving the tie by stopping five-of-seven shots on goal.

Most of the game's major statistics were indicative of a double-overtime draw. The Jackets outshot Westminster by a 21-20 edge and put nine shots on goal to the Titans' seven. The Titans did have a sizeable 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Waynesburg returns to action on Tuesday when it makes a road trip to Saint Vincent. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
