LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 23) – Junior defender
Ryan Mills (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) played hero Wednesday evening as the first-year transfer scored the game-winning goal 2:44 into the first overtime to give the Yellow Jacket men's soccer team a 1-0 victory, its first Presidents' Athletic Conference win of 2019 over Saint Vincent.
The victory was also the team's first since Sept. 24 when it upended Pitt Greensburg 4-1 on home turf.
Junior goalkeeper
Adam Dolan (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) recorded his first shutout of 2019, stopping all three of the shots on goal he faced.
Waynesburg (4-8-3, 1-2-3) came out strong, recording 10 shots in the first half compared to Saint Vincent (2-11-2, 1-2-3), who tallied just three. The second half was rather even, with the Yellow Jackets peppering the Bearcats with eight more shots and Saint Vincent responding with six of its own. However, neither team was able to find the back of the net as the teams remained knotted at 0-0 heading into overtime .
The overtime period was all Waynesburg, with sophomore midfielder
Jake Hall (State College, Pa. / State College) registering two shots in the first two minutes, the second of which was blocked out of bounds to set up a corner kick by senior midfielder
Nate Kummer (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills) in the 92
nd minute.
Kummer placed the ball right where Mills directed a header off his kick to the right side of the net past the Saint Vincent goalkeeper for the first goal of his Waynesburg career. Kummer's assist was his team-leading fourth of the season.
Hall paced the team in shots on the night with five total. Freshman forward
David Brown (Seoul, South Korea / Yongsan International School of Seoul), senior midfielder
Nate Biondi (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) and sophomore defender
Ryan McCann (Runcorn, England / Moon (Pa.)) each added three shots to the cause.
The win gives Waynesburg six points in PAC action, which keeps it in contention for the playoffs with two games remaining. The Yellow Jackets will have to win the final two games of the season and get some help from other teams in the conference to finish in the top four spot and punch their ticket to the postseason.
Waynesburg will look to keep its playoff hopes alive this Saturday, Oct. 26, as it hosts Thiel at 8 p.m. at John F. Wiley Stadium. The Jackets will celebrate senior night.
