Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer dominates Thiel on senior night

Yellow Jackets cruise to 5-1 victory

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 26) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team hosted Thiel for a senior night showdown on Saturday night at john F. Wiley Stadium. The Yellow Jackets controlled the contest from start to finish on their way to a 5-1 triumph over the Tomcats.

Two of Waynesburg's (5-8-3, 2-2-3) seven senior honorees connected on the game's first goal, which came midway through the 27th minute. Nate Biondi (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) was set up by Nate Kummer (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills) and scored from close range in the 27th minute to put the home team up 1-0.

Just around three minutes later, junior Daniel Hott (Cumberland, Md. / Fort Hill) posted the eventual game winner on a beautiful 25-yarder that found the top right corner midway through the 30th minute.

Thiel scored its only goal of the game with exactly eight minutes remaining in the first half to make the score 2-1. The difference stayed at a single point throughout the remainder of the opening period.

During the 60th minute, Kummer and Biondi switched roles to make the score 3-1 Jackets. This time it was Biondi finding Kummer from around 10 yards away to give the home team some breathing room.

Less than two minutes later, Kummer struck again, this time on a well-placed cross from junior Cam Sutherland (Millville, Mass. / Whitinsville Christian) that he buried for his second goal of the night and a 4-1 Waynesburg advantage. After watching the veterans do most of the damage, freshman David Brown (Seoul South Korea, Yongsan International School of Seoul) got in on the scoring fun. Brown posted the game's final goal with an unassisted effort late in the 74th minute.

The Jackets' five goals, which tied for the largest offensive output of the season, were more than enough support for goalkeepers Adam Dolan (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) and Matthew Hilarzewski (Crafton, Pa. / Carlynton). Dolan started and picked up the win after making two saves over 79:09. Hilarzewski closed things up with two saves over his 10:51 of work.

Not surprisingly, Waynesburg dominated most of the major statistical categories on the night. The Jackets out-shot Thiel 27-7 and had a 13-to-five advantage in shots on goal. The Orange and Black also racked up 10 corner kicks, while the Tomcats attempted just two.

Waynesburg closes out the 2019 regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 30, when Geneva comes to John F. Wiley Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
