WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 4) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team hosted Grove City for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match on a cool, early autumn night at John F. Wiley Stadium. After falling behind early, Waynesburg battled back through 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime before the contest ended in a 2-2 double-overtime draw.
The tie ended Waynesburg's (3-6-2) four-game losing streak to Grove City (3-6-3, 1-0-1).
The scoring started early on Friday night as a penalty kick in the fourth minute allowed the visiting team to take the early lead. The Jackets came up with an answer to the night's first score in the 12
th minute, when senior
Justin Buberl (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) tallied his team-best fifth goal of the season to knot the score at 1-1. Senior
Nate Kummer (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills) assisted on the tally, giving him a squad-best three helpers so far this fall.
After the visitors regained the lead late in the 28
th minute, Waynesburg produced the night's final goal 7:34 into the second half. Freshman
David Brown (Seoul, South Korea / Yongsan International School of Seoul) did the honors by posting his second score of the 2019 campaign. Junior
Cam Sutherland (Millville, Mass. / Whitinville Christian) picked up an assist on the tally.
The two teams went back-and-forth over the final 37:26 of play, with neither able to come up with a third-and-deciding goal. The final five minutes saw both teams putting shots on goal, but with none of them finding the netting, the contest moved to overtime.
Waynesburg nearly pulled out a victory with five seconds left in the contest. Unfortunately, sophomore
Jake Hall's (State College, Pa. / State College) header was denied by the Grove City keeper.
Friday saw the Yellow Jackets put together one of their finest performances against the perennial PAC playoff participants from Grove City in recent history. They out-shot Grove City 21-12 and held a 10-6 edge in shots on goal. The Jackets also doubled up GCC in terms of corner kicks (6-3).
Junior Waynesburg goalie
Adam Dolan (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) logged all 110 minutes in net for the home team and tallied four saves on the night.
The Jackets are off until Saturday, Oct. 12, when they head to Bethany for another PAC showdown. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
