WASHINGTON, Pa. (Nov. 9) – Freshman
Colby Morris (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) made his first collegiate tournament one to remember as he and his Yellow Jacket teammates saw their first live action of the season at Saturday's Washington & Jefferson Invitational.
Morris was named Outstanding Wrestler of the event as he battled through a difficult 157-pound weight class. The Waynesburg native got off to a fast start by pinning Thiel's Jake Longerman in 4:52, his first fall as a collegiate wrestler. He followed that up with his first upset of the day, a 4-2 decision over Stevens' Dylan Van Sickell, the number-two seed in the bracket. Van Sickell came into the day featured in the D3Wrestle.com national rankings.
Morris picked up his second-straight win by a 4-2 final score to reach the championship bout. He knocked off Lycoming's Paul Santomarco to set up an All-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) final against Thiel's Austin Bonacci. Morris concluded his run to the title by edging Bonacci 3-1.
Another Yellow Jacket freshman, heavyweight
Rocky McGeary (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) made a good first impression on his teammates with a third-place showing at 285 pounds. McGeary pinned his first collegiate opponent in just 1:06, but needed all seven minutes of his bout with Thiel's Gavin Colligan to earn a 3-2 win.
McGeary logged his second bonus-point win of the day with a 14-3 major decision against Ryan Weitz of Alderson Broaddus that landed him in the semifinals. Unfortunately, the first-year big man had his run at a title come to an end against the eventual champion. However, McGeary ended his day on a high note by pinning Alderson Broaddus' Jared Burgoyne in 2:55 to take the bronze.
After missing all of his sophomore season with an injury, junior
Caleb Baxter (Butler, Pa. / Butler) returned to the mats and looked strong at 174 pounds. He went 2-0 with a pin and a technical fall to reach the semifinals. Baxter ended his day there and earned fourth place with a pair of defaults.
Thanks in part to its three place winners, Waynesburg placed sixth in the team standings.
The Yellow Jackets return to competition on Saturday, Nov. 16, when they host the Waynesburg Duals. The Jackets will face Johns Hopkins, Messiah and Division II Fairmont State at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Action is scheduled to get started at 11 a.m.
