WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 16) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team hosted Johns Hopkins, Messiah and Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Washington & Jefferson for a quad-match on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets defeated Johns Hopkins before falling to Messiah on the day. W&J and Waynesburg decided not to wrestle each other, saving that for a tri-match at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Jan. 8.

Session one saw the Yellow Jackets (1-1) down the Blue Jays (0-2) 32-14. After JHU won the 125-pound bout to take a 5-0 lead, Waynesburg rebounded with four-straight victories to build a 19-5 advantage.

Freshman Noah Grossnickle (Myersville, Md. / Middletown) and senior Matt Lascola (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Langley) picked up forfeits at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively, and freshman Jace Guy (Bloomington, Md. / Southern Garrett) won his collegiate debut with a 9-1 major decision at 149 pounds. Freshman Colby Morris (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) improved to 5-0 on the year with a 9-3 decision win at 157 pounds.

Senior Zach Mackall (Austintown, Ohio / Austintown-Fitch) nearly made it five-straight wins when he locked up with Dominic Reyes, who was ranked just outside the top 10 list put out by D3Wrestle.com. The 165-pound battle went right down to the wire, but Mackall came up just short in a 6-5 decision.

Junior Caleb Baxter (Butler, Pa. / Butler) got Waynesburg back on the winning track with a 9-4 triumph at 174 pounds. The Blue Jays picked up their final win of the match at 184 pounds, before senior Adam Rigney (Mount Union, Pa. / Mount Union) picked up a forfeit at 197 pounds and freshman heavyweight Rocky McGeary (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) closed out the win with a 13-2 major decision.

Waynesburg fell into an early hole against Messiah (3-0) and struggled to dig out of it as the matched rolled to its conclusion. The Falcons jumped ahead 18-0, before Morris kept his undefeated streak going with a 7-0 victory at 157 pounds.

Mackall made it two wins in a row with a pin at 165 pounds in 5:42. Baxter was in fine position t0 extend Waynesburg's winning streak to three weights after building an 8-3 lead in the first period. Unfortunately, Baxter got caught in the second period and defeated.

Messiah added a second-straight fall at 184, but the Jackets bounced back to take the final two bouts. Rigney improved to 2-0 on the day with a come-from-behind 12-7 victory at 197 pounds, while McGeary logged his second major decision of the day by a 13-2 final score.

Waynesburg is off until Wednesday, Nov. 20, when it makes a trip to Division II Shippensburg. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
