WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 2) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team opened its 2019-20 schedule by hosting the annual Orange vs. Black wrestle-offs on Saturday. After 11 bouts had concluded, it was the Black Team that claimed a 31-27 victory.
The day opened with a matchup at heavyweight between sophomore
Leo Fetterolf (McKeesport, Pa. / Elizabeth Forward) and freshman
Ben Champ (Steubenville, Ohio / Steubenville Big Red). Fetterolf kicked off his second year with the squad by pinning his younger counterpart.
The next bout saw sophomore
Dylan Williams (Schellsburg, Pa. / Chestnut Ridge), the returning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champion at 125 pounds, take on freshman 133-pounder
Noah Grossnickle. Grossnickle impressed in his first collegiate action by taking Williams to overtime with the score tied 1-1. However, it was the veteran who picked up the only takedown of the contest to win by 3-1 decision in sudden victory.
A freshman tangled with a returner for a third-straight bout to open the morning's action, as newcomer
Luke Lavanway (Monroe, Mich. / Mason) squared off with senior
Dillion Charlton (Stoystown, Pa. / North Star) at 184 pounds. Charlton made a strong case for the starting job by earning a technical fall over Lavanway.
Speaking of veterans moving up in weight class, senior
Zach Mackall (Austintown, Ohio / Austintown-Fitch) drew first-year sophomore
Scott Miller (Bedford, Pa. / Chestnut Ridge) in a matchup at 165 pounds. Miller showed plenty of ability in both the top and bottom positions and kept the match close through the first two periods. But, Mackall was able to pull away in the third period thanks to a cluster of takedowns that resulted in a 21-11 major decision.
Highly touted rookie
Jace Guy (Bloomington, Md. / Southern Garrett) put together a strong first showing in Orange and Black against sophomore
Anthony Medina (Fort Lee, N.J. / St. Joseph Regional) in a 149-pound tilt. The three-time Maryland state place winner rolled to a technical fall, as he looked to establish himself as the man to beat at the weight.
Junior
Caleb Baxter (Butler, Pa. / Butler) was on his way to being a star for the Jackets at 174 pounds following a fantastic freshman season two years ago. Unfortunately, an injury derailed his sophomore campaign before it could even get started. Baxter made his return to the team on Saturday morning and reminded the crowd at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse of what he can do by pinning senior
Cory Supan (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette).
Another highly touted newcomer made his team debut when freshman heavyweight
Rocky McGeary (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) tangled with Fetterolf in the second 285-pound match of the day. McGeary put himself at the top of the list of contenders to take the starting job by pinning Fetterolf.
Grossnickle returned to the mat in the day's next contest. After his solid showing against Williams, the Maryland native logged his first victory as a collegian by downing fellow freshman Brendan Hanning (Washington, Pa. / Washington).
Medina joined Grossnickle in being a two-match participant on the day when he faced off with returning 141-pound PAC champion
Matt Lascola (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Langley). Lascola showed his championship form by pinning his younger counterpart.
Senior
Adam Rigney (Mount Union, Pa. / Mount Union), who is considered a strong candidate to take over the starting job at 197 pounds, did nothing but strengthen his argument when he pinned Lavanway.
The day ended with the debut of Waynesburg native
Colby Morris. Morris showed the form that made him a standout at nearby Waynesburg Central High School by pinning Miller to wrap up the morning's action.
The Jackets get a chance to prove themselves against live competition on Saturday, Nov. 9, when they travel to the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. Start time is scheduled for 9:45 a.m.
