Box Score 2 LEMONT FURNACE, Pa. (March 16) – The Waynesburg University softball team braved the cold temperatures for a road doubleheader at Penn State Fayette. The Yellow Jackets rolled to a sweep of the Roaring Lions by the final scores of 11-0 (five innings) and 13-6.
After a scoreless first inning in the opener, Waynesburg (4-8) put up five runs in the top of the second frame and two more in the third to take a 7-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets tacked on four more in the fourth to bring up the final score.
Senior first baseman
Alex Lawrence (Bridgeville, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) homered to pace the offense, while senior pitcher
Courtney Messenger (East Liverpool, Ohio / Beaver Local) was outstanding in the circle. Messenger allowed just two hits over a five-inning complete game showing.
Waynesburg opened the scoring in the late contest with a run in the top of the second inning, before putting the game out of reach with a six-spot in the third. The Roaring Lions (1-8) battled back with a pair of scores in the third, three in the fourth and one more in the fifth. However, the Jackets gave themselves a comfortable cushion by tallying a run in the fourth and five in the fifth.

Courtney Syfert (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland) came a double short of hitting for the cycle. Sophomore pitcher
Emma Kubalak logged the win in the circle after working all seven innings.

Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday when it makes a road trip to Franciscan. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
