Men's soccer plays to weather-shortened draw

Yellow Jackets tied Chatham 1-1 in first-ever meeting

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Sept. 28) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team had its first-ever game against a Chatham program that is in its first ear of existence cut short on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets and Cougars battled into overtime, but inclement weather conditions forced the game to end before a winner could be decided in a 1-1 draw.

Things started well for the Jackets (3-6-1, 0-0-1), who opened the game's scoring in the 23rd minute. Junior Cam Sutherland (Millville, Mass. / Whitinsville Christian) found the back of the net for his third goal of the season.

The visiting team appeared as though it was going to make that one-point edge last the entirety of the contest until Chatham (3-5-1, 0-0-1) broke through for its only score of the day in the 87th minute. Waynesburg had one last chance to pull out a win in regulation thanks to a corner kick with 1:06 showing on the game clock, but was unable to cash in for a game winner.

Both teams found their offense in the first overtime period as they combined for seven total shots. However, when none found the back of the net, the game went to overtime period number two. The Waynesburg defense was able to turn away a Chatham attack that attempted three shots before the contest was called in the 104th minute.

Sutherland not only tallied Waynesburg's only goal, but he attempted a game-high five shots on the day. Junior goalkeeper Adam Dolan (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) stopped five-of-six shots on goal to preserve the tie.

Waynesburg returns to PAC play on Friday when it hosts Grove City at John F. Wiley Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
