COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 18) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team hit the road for Saturday's Will Abele Invitational, which was hosted by Ursinus College. The Yellow Jackets' 76.0 pointes allowed them to finish sixth out of 16 teams that competed on the day and left with a pair of individual titles earned by two of the team's top freshmen.
First-year standouts
Colby Morris (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) and
Rocky McGeary (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) took the gold in the 157 and 285-pound brackets, respectively. The two have combined for five individual championships in the Jackets' five tournament appearances.
Morris found himself atop the podium for the first time since the season-opening Washington & Jefferson Invitational by going 4-0 with all four victories coming by decision. Wrestling as the three seed, the Waynesburg native knocked off a pair of nationally recognized opponents. He first upset second-seeded Matthew Sacco of the College of New Jersey 4-1 in the semifinals to set up a showdown with top-seeded Eric Hutchinson of York. Morris upped his offensive game to down Hutchinson 8-5 and take the crown.
Sacco is listed as an Honorable Mention selection to the D3Wrestle.com national ranking. Hutchinson is ranked ahead of him as a Contender for the website's national top 10 list.
After winning back-to-back titles at tournaments hosted by Messiah and Nassau C.C., McGeary saw his run of championships end in the finals of the Waynesburg Invitational. He got back to his golden ways with a 4-0 run on Saturday.
The top-seeded heavyweight pinned his way to the semifinals where he gutted out a 6-4 decision to reach the title tilt against the three seed, Thomas Marretta of TCNJ. McGeary dispatched of his opponent in an efficient 7-2 manner to earn his third championships of his debut collegiate campaign.
Senior
Zach Mackall (Austintown, Ohio / Austintown-Fitch) bounced back from a disappointing loss in his first match of the day to reel off three-straight wins in consolations and take third at 165 pounds. Following an upset 8-5 setback, the two seed took out his frustrations on his first three opponents in wrestle-backs. After notching three-straight pins, Mackall upset top-seeded Jeremiah Oakes of Scranton 9-7 to earn the bronze.
Junior
Josh Kuslock (Hickory, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) made it four placers for Waynesburg thanks to his performance at 149 pounds. Wrestling as the fourth seed, Kuslock combined a pin and an 8-2 decision to reach the semifinals. Unfortunately, he was knocked into consolations with a decision loss and eventually settled for sixth place.
Waynesburg opens Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) competition on Thursday with a road trip to arch-rival Washington & Jefferson. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
