Yellow Jackets highlight best and brightest of the past 10 years

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 31) – As 2020 comes to a close, the Waynesburg University wrestling team decided to take a look back at its best and brightest since 2010. After plenty of discussion and looking back at what has been one of the most successful decades since joining the NCAA Division III ranks, head coach Ron Headlee and his staff are proud to announce the all-decade team from 2010-2020.

The following individuals, along with dozens of teammates that have put on the Waynesburg singlet, helped the Yellow Jackets to put together some truly impressive numbers over the past 10 years:

* 115 dual match wins
* PAC-best 19-3 conference record
* PAC-best seven conference team titles
* 44 individual PAC championships
* Six top-four team finishes at the regional level
* 11 individual regional champions
* 22 NCAA Division III national qualifiers
* 10 NCAA Division III All-Americans
* 2 NCAA Division III national finalists
* 1 NCAA Division III national champion
* 19 Academic All-Americans

Here is the Waynesburg University wrestling all-decade team of the 2010's:

125 Pounds – Alex Crown
Crown burst onto the scene in 2009 by winning his first of four PAC titles. He became Waynesburg's first four-time individual conference champion when he grabbed the 2013 crown at 133 pounds. He also ended his Yellow Jacket career with 110 total wins, which set the program record at the time. The Carlisle, Pennsylvania, native's impressive collegiate resume included a regional title and a fourth-place  finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships in 2011, which was the highest finish for a Jacket wrestler at nationals at that time and the best finish at nationals for a PAC wrestler since 1993.

Honorable Mention – Tristan Buxton
Buxton was a two-time PAC champion and qualified for nationals as a senior in 2018. His 126 collegiate victories currently rank second on Waynesburg's all-time wins list.

133 Pounds – Nick Garber
Garber enrolled at Waynesburg in 2007, a year before Headlee's arrival. After a solid freshman season that included his first PAC title and being named the conference's Most Outstanding Wrestler, the Waynesburg native blossomed under Headlee before wrapping up his collegiate career in 2011. He collected three conference crowns and a pair of individual regional titles. Garber also made two trips to nationals and earned All-American status with a seventh-place showing as a junior.

141 Pounds – Filippo Crivelli
Crivelli was a solid everyday contributor since day one for the Yellow Jackets. He won a pair of individual PAC titles and his 122 collegiate victories currently rank third on Waynesburg's all-time wins list. The Clinton, Pennsylvania native was also a star in the classroom, where he earned Academic All-American applause.

149 Pounds – Luke Lohr
Despite battling multiple injuries over his time as a Yellow Jacket, Lohr was a star during his Waynesburg career. He became the program's second four-time PAC champion, made three trips to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament and became Waynesburg's first two-time NCAA Division III All-American by placing seventh and eighth, respectively, in 2013 and 2015. The Somerset, Pennsylvania's 121 wins currently rank fourth the program's all-time list.

Honorable Mention – Shaun Wilson
Wilson, a Waynesburg native, did a lot in his one semester with the Waynesburg wrestling team, which came in the winter of 2017. He posted a 22-9 record, won a PAC title, came seconds away from winning a regional crown, qualified for nationals and reached the podium with an eighth-place showing.

157 Pounds – Garett Johnston
Johnston was one of the truest examples of a student-athlete to ever suit up for the Yellow Jackets. Not only did he win a pair of PAC titles and twice place at the regional level, but he was also a two-time Academic All-American. Johnston, a native of nearby Sycamore, Pennsylvania, exploded during his senior year. He posted a 35-2 overall record and took third at the regional championships.

Honorable Mention – Sam Lombardo
Lombardo broke the century mark for collegiate victories with 101 wins in a Waynesburg singlet. The Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, native won a PAC title in 2012 and was a four-time regional place-winner.

165 Pounds – Sam Guidi
Guidi won just one PAC title over his four years at Waynesburg, but made two trips to nationals, showcasing just how high the talent level has been this past decade in the conference. Not only did he make it to the national championship tournament, but the McDonald, Pennsylvania, native took fourth at the 2015 event.

174 Pounds – Anthony Bonaventura
Bonaventura worked his way up from backup to starter by the time his junior year came around. That same year, he won a PAC title and made his first of two trips to the NCAA Division III National Championships. His senior season saw him return to nationals and go on a memorable run to the championship bout. After being unseeded for the event, the Commack, New York, native upset the second and third-seeded grapplers at his weight class on his way to a second-place finish, which was the highest a Jacket wrestler had finished at the NCAA Division III National Championships to that point in time. His silver medal showing capped a 42-5 season, which was the winningest season in program history to that point. Bonaventura was also lauded for his academic excellence as an Academic All-American.

184 Pounds – Ryan Shank
Shank transferred to Waynesburg after earning NAIA national qualifier status at Lindsay Wilson. During his three years as a Yellow Jacket, the South Charleston, West Virginia, native won a pair of PAC titles and punched his ticket to nationals as a senior in 2017. Another star in the classroom, Shank earned Academic All-American laurels.

Honorable Mention – Cameron Fine
Fine transferred to Waynesburg after a year at Division II Seton Hill. After joining the Yellow Jackets, the Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, native earned a trip to the NCAA Division III National Championships in 2014. His educational prowess was also at an elite level, as is evident by his being named an Academic All-American.

197 Pounds – Corbin Semple
When Headlee and long-time assistant coach John Yates were hired to lead the Waynesburg wrestling program, they were able to convince former PIAA state high school champion and Waynesburg native Corbin Semple to join them. Before graduating following just two years with the Yellow Jackets, Semple won two PAC titles, two regional titles and made two trips to nationals.

Honorable Mention – Ken Burrs
When it comes to athletic explosiveness and intimidation, few this past decade could match Ken Burrs. When he wasn't battling injuries, Burrs earned a pair of PAC titles and twice qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships.

285 Pounds – Jake Evans
Jake Evans is not only one of the greatest wrestlers in Waynesburg history, but one of the finest Division III grapplers of all time. Over four unbelievable seasons in Orange and Black, the Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, native ended his Yellow Jacket career with 180 collegiate wins, which is not only tops on the school's list, but it is the highest total for any NCAA wrestler, regardless of division. Evans is Waynesburg's most recent four-time PAC champion and placed all four years at the regional championships, including a pair of titles. He made three trips to nationals, the second of which (2018) saw him make school history by becoming Waynesburg's most recent NCAA champ and its first at an NCAA Division III event. During his junior season, Evans posted a 50-3 record, which is the school record for wins in a season.

Honorable Mention – Rocky McGeary
Waynesburg may have caught heavyweight lightning in a bottle twice with McGeary, who is currently in his sophomore season. Joining the team the year after Evans graduated, the McDonald, Pennsylvania, native put together the greatest freshman season in program history. McGeary went 38-2 last year, the most wins ever by a Yellow Jacket freshman, won Waynesburg's seventh-straight PAC heavyweight title, scored a regional crown and was named an NWCA first-team All-American after the Covid-19 pandemic cancelled last year's NCAA Division III National Championships. He enters the 2020-21 campaign ranked number one in the country at 285 pounds.

Coach – Ron Headlee
With the help of a slew of assistant coaches, many of whom have gone on to be successful coaches at both the high school and college levels, Headlee has led the Yellow Jackets to heightened levels of sustained success since taking over head coaching duties prior to the 2008-09 season. He eclipsed 100 collegiate dual victories during the 2017-18 campaign, is a seven-time PAC Coach of the Year and was named 2017 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Coach of the Year.
