WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 23) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team celebrated senior day on Saturday night by hosting Thiel for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup. The Yellow Jackets got out to a hot start, but had to turn back a game Tomcat effort before picking up a 2-1 double-overtime victory.
Waynesburg (3-12-0, 2-6-0) needed just 18:15 to open the scoring when junior
Samuel Hawkins (St. Mary's County, Md. / Great Mills) took a feed from senior
Daniel Hott (Cumberland, Md. / Fort Hill) and found the back of the net for the fourth time this year.
Despite outshooting the Tomcats (1-13-3, 1-7) 23-8 through regulation time, Waynesburg was unable to add to its lead. Thiel, meanwhile, logged an equalizer in the 84
th minute. With the score still tied 1-1 after 90 minutes, the two conference rivals went to overtime.
The shot totals were much more even in the 10-minute extra period, with both squads attempting three. However, none of the six tries found the back of the net and the game went to overtime number two.
The Jackets finally sent the John F. Wiley Stadium crowd home in the 104
th minute, when Hawkins got the golden goal.
Freshman goalkeeper
Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) played all 104:23 and made two saves to get the win in net.
The Jackets wrap up their 2021 season Wednesday, Oct. 27, when they host Geneva. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
