Wrestling opens season with annual intra-squad match

Yellow Jackets hit the mats with Orange/Black Duals

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 30) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team opened the 2021-22 season by holding its annual intra-squad wrestle-offs. The event gave fans of the program the opportunity to get their first look at this year's squad.

The day opened with a lightweight match between freshman William Wilson (Palm Harbor, Fla. / Dunedin) and senior Dylan Winters (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler). Despite not wrestling since his freshman year, Winters looked impressive during his return to the mat by pinning Wilson in 49 seconds.

A pair of newcomers faced off in another lightweight clash as freshmen Quinton Frampton (Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro) and Esdras Castillo (Silver Spring, Md. / Wheaton) locked horns in match two. Frampton picked up a first-period fall of his own, doing so in 1:30.

The pins kept coming in the third match of the day, which took place at 184 pounds. Junior Luke Lavanway (Monroe, Mich. / Mason) earned his fall in 3:48 over graduate student Josh Kumer (Hickory, Pa. / Fort Cherry).

At 157 pounds, freshman Seth Evans (Sharon, Pa. / Sharon) was successful in his collegiate debut by earning a 7-2 decision over sophomore Kyle Hinerman. The fans gathered for the match saw another fall from a Waynesburg newcomer, this one from first-year sophomore Trent Patrick (Delmont, Pa. / Greensburg Salem). Patrick stuck fellow heavyweight Leo Fetterolf (McKeesport, Pa. / Elizabeth Forward) in 3:12.

The final three bouts of the morning came as either catch weight or exhibition bouts.

Freshman Damion Finnegan (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) outlast Frampton to the tune of a 3-1 decision victory. Highly touted junior transfer Garrett Cook earned his first win as a Jacket by edging Lavanway 6-4 and the match closed with sophomore Alex Coppolo (Bellefonte, Pa. / Bellefonte) pulling out a 9-6 victory over Evans.

Waynesburg faces its first live competition on Saturday, Nov. 6, when it travels to the Ned McGinley Invitational Tournament, which is hosted by King's College. Start time is scheduled for 9 a.m.
