WASHINGTON, Pa. (Nov. 13) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team traveled north to compete in the Washington & Jefferson Invitational on Saturday. A big day at 133 pounds for senior Dylan Winters (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) highlighted the Yellow Jackets' efforts, which led to them placing 12^th in the 15-team field.
 
Winters went 4-2 on the day, including a 47-second pin in his first match of the day. After falling into consolations during his next bout, the veteran lightweight won his next three bouts (two by pin and another by major decision) to reach the blood round. Unfortunately, Winters came one win shy of placing in the top sixth.
 
Sophomore Alex Coppolo (Bellefonte, Pa. / Bellefonte) got his Saturday off to a strong start with a pin and an 8-1 decision victory to reach the quarterfinals at 149 pounds. Unfortunately, Coppolo ran into the top seed in the brackets and fell into consolations where his day ended with a 2-2 mark.
 
Freshman Seth Evans (Sharon, Pa. / Sharon) also posted a 2-2 day, doing so at 157 pounds. Evans opened his run with a pin in 1:03 before dropping a decision in the second round to drop into wrestle-backs. The first-year middleweight gritted out a 5-3 decision to advance in consolations, but fell by decision to end his day.
 
Junior Luke LaVanway (Monroe, Mich. / Mason) advanced into the quarterfinal round at 197 pounds. LaVanway wrestled into the third period with the number-four seed but got caught and dropped into consolations, where he was eliminated.
 
Freshman Damion Finnegan (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) was also victorious at the tournament.
 
The Jackets are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 20, when they host Pitt Bradford, Alvernia and Glenville State for the Waynesburg Duals.
